I’m the Grocery Editor at Kitchn — And This Is the Best New Thing I Tried All Week

As the Grocery Editor at Kitchn, a big part of my job is knowing what’s on and about to hit store shelves. This is a fun and, at times, daunting task. (At one point, I debated purchasing a second freezer to deal with the overflow.) There are dozens of new collaborations, flavors, and companies launching every month — and I try to stay on top of all of them.

Because I’m dedicated to my job, I’ve made it my mission to try as many new groceries as I can each week and share the ones I like best. Sometimes these items will be first-time product launches, other times they might just be new to me (and maybe some of you). Either way, I want to tell you about them and why I think they’re worth adding to your cart. This week, I tried multiple products from more than a dozen different brands. The best thing I tried all week? It’s a dairy-free version of a weekend staple and, coincidentally, two different companies make it! Any guesses? I’m talking about dairy-free cream cheese. That’s right, I tried two different brands this week and they were both ridiculously amazing! Let’s take a look.

Nature’s Fynd Dairy-Free Cream Cheese

Nature’s Fynd cream cheese tastes like my childhood. When I was growing up, my dad would get up early on Sundays and pick up a dozen fresh bagels for breakfast. On the best days, they’d still be warm when he got home and we’d spread the cool cream cheese on sliced halves and eat them open-faced. No toaster necessary! 

Made with Fy, a nutritional fungi protein grown using a fraction of land, water, and energy compared to traditional protein sources, these dairy-free cream cheeses have the same consistency and spreadability as dairy-based cream cheeses. Nature’s Fynd is available in two different flavors: Original and Chive & Onion. Original (top left) is smooth and creamy and would make a great base for a DIY veggie cream cheese. Chive and Onion (bottom right) is all that, plus the delicious onion flavor you’d expect. Both are vegan, nut-free, soy-free, and have no artificial flavors or preservatives. 

Modern Kitchen Animal-Free Cream Cheese Spread

There is no such thing as too much cream cheese in my apartment. Unlike Nature’s Fynd, these cream cheeses are made with an animal-free whey protein from its partners at Perfect Day. In addition to how creamy the spreads are, what I like about Modern Kitchen is its variety of flavors. There is no plain (aka Original) flavor, but the company does make a Spring Onion and Chive flavor, which is equally as delicious as Nature’s Fynd, although less onion-y. (I would buy both again.)

The company makes two additional flavors: Harissa Pepper (right) and Strawberry (left). The former is studded with bits of red bell peppers and has a spicy finish; the latter is both strawberry-forward and subtle. I find fruit-flavored cream cheeses can easily dip into the too sweet end of the spectrum, but this was spot-on. All are vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and soy-free. Now, who wants to come over for bagel Sunday?
