Quick: Close your eyes and imagine the very best tool in your kitchen. The thing you couldn’t possibly live without. The thing you reach for night after night. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? I did this mental exercise once and realized that I love my GIR silicone spatula way more than I thought I did. (How did people ever stir or scrape things before this came onto the scene?)

Out of curiosity, I asked Kitchn readers for their cant-live-without kitchen gadgets. Here’s what you all think are the greatest things since sliced bread.

“A great chef’s knife.” — Jenny K.

“I know I can do slicing with a knife, but I thank my lucky stars for my mandoline whenever I use it.” — Amy K.

“I love my mandoline. I also have cut-proof gloves to wear when using it, so I can’t cut myself.” — Kath T.

“My monster-sized electric griddle with warmer tray. Hubs is never far from French toast and bacon.” — Virginia B.

“The Microplane!” — Georgia L.

“Toss-up between my exprimidor (Mexican lime squeezer) and my Rosle Y-peeler.—Tal N.

“My food processor is my miracle machine. It gets so much done.” — Julie M.

“I love my electric kettle and Dash Egg Cooker!” — Kimberly M.

“A vegetable chopper. You place the vegetable on a metal grid, then close the lid and everything is perfectly diced. I use it almost exclusively for onions, but it was 100 percent worth it. All I have to do is cut the onion into wedges and seconds later it’s perfectly diced.” — Merin C.

“The KitchenAid Stand Mixer.” — Lori S.

“My slotted spoon. And my metal fish spatula. I can do almost anything with just those two kitchen essentials.” — Michelle T.

“The air fryer!”— Melissa J.
