The freezer section at Aldi is legendary. In it, you’ll find a bag of chicken so beloved it has its own Facebook Group, rose-shaped cones that rival the best ice cream truck treats, and possibly the most festive gnocchi we’ve ever seen. Needless to say, the competition for the year’s best freezer finds is fierce and, as judges, not a responsibility we take likely.

After sampling our way through much of the freezer cases at Aldi (somebody had to do it!), we narrowed down the list to our top five. These are best new frozen groceries we bought at Aldi in 2022.

1. Specially Selected Sushi Grade Wild Caught Ahi Tuna Steaks, $5.95 for 3 (4-ounce) steaks

Looking to mix up your repertoire of dinner options? These flash-frozen tuna steaks, which are $5.95 for three, are the perfect just-slightly-outside-the-box option. Use it to make quick and easy poke bowls, sushi rolls, or grilled tuna. You will need the foresight to take these out of the freezer ahead of time, but they’re especially clutch when you know you have a busy week or evening on the horizon.

2. Cattleman’s Ranch Unseasoned Black Angus Patties, $8.49 for 2 pounds

Frozen burgers are a go-to for easy dinners (just add a side and maybe a salad and you’re good), and these angus patties take the flavor to the next level. They start out fairly large, but shrink down perfectly to bun-size while cooking, and are juicy without being greasy or drippy. Frankly, they’re almost as good as burgers made from scratch. The unseasoned variety features just one item on its ingredient list: black angus beef.

3. Fusia Asian Inspirations California Roll, $5.89 for 13 ounces

For kids with tastes slightly more adventurous than PB&J, these ready-made frozen sushi rolls are a revelation for school lunches. Each package contains 15 pieces of sushi, which could easily make up three lunches for little ones. Just pack the sushi in the kiddo’s (or your) lunch box in the morning and it will be thawed and ready to eat by lunchtime. Aldi sells California, shrimp and avocado, and spicy crab rolls. These certainly won’t be as good as sushi prepared by a restaurant, but they’re comparable to ready-to-eat sushi from your local grocery store.

4. Season’s Choice Steamed Super Sweet Corn, 95 cents for 1 (12-ounce) bag

The versatility, convenience, affordability, and longer shelf life of frozen corn is unmatched. While locally grown sweet corn husked at home is awesome in the peak summer season, you can rely on frozen corn year-round. Mix it into salsas, soups, pastas, salads, and so much more. It’s also beautiful in a bowl of mixed greens or in a warm corn pudding or skillet cornbread.

5. Deutsche Küche Bavarian Soft Pretzels, $3.49 for 6

Looking for a warm, salty, soft pretzel without braving the cold or the crowds at the mall? Aldi’s Deutsche Küche Bavarian Soft Pretzels are what you need. “The German selections are some of my favorite things to snack on,” says private chef Samantha Davis-Allonce. Soft pretzels can be tricky to make from scratch, so heat these bad boys up with some honey mustard dipping sauce and put your feet up.
