Which frozen appetizers will please a crowd? Is there a difference between those bags of frozen broccoli? And what frozen pie crust can rival one that’s homemade? The freezer aisle, as you may well know, can be a little overwhelming. (So. Many. Choices.) We spent much of this past year sampling dozens of frozen items to find answers to these vital questions.

When we looked back at the freezer aisle greats we tried in 2022, these six items clearly stood out from the rest. They all came out on top in side-by-side taste tests! These are the dips, sticks, rolls, cakes, and more we’ll continue to add to our carts in 2023 and beyond.

1. Great Value Spinach, Artichoke & Gouda Dip

Wow, is this dip good. It’s creamy, cheesy, rich, and thick. And compared to all the other brands we tried in this side-by-side taste test, it was the only one to have any visible artichoke and wilted spinach leaves larger than a speck. Walmart’s Great Value brand adds Gouda cheese near the top of the ingredient list to the traditional mozzarella, Parmesan, Romano, and cream cheeses, and you can taste the difference.

2. FarmRich Breaded Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Each bite of these breaded mozzarella sticks (another taste test winner) starts out pleasantly crisp, and is followed by a mouthful of gooey stringy cheese that makes it almost impossible not to finish a stick in record time. The breading has just the right amount of salt to balance out the rich mozzarella cheese. The cheese is gooey but not so gooey that you have a mouthful of molten hot liquid. It’s chewy and exactly what you want a mozz stick to be.

3. Publix Steam-In Bag Frozen Broccoli Florets

Did you know Publix carries four varieties of frozen broccoli under its store-brand label (boxed finely chopped florets and three steam-in-bag options)? It’s no surprise that one would take the top spot in our official taste test. We didn’t know, though, that this steam-in bag of frozen broccoli florets would be the undisputed winner. The bag is filled with generous, bite-sized pieces. Bright green with a firm and crisp texture, once heated in the microwave, it’s perfect for roasting straight from the freezer or as a stand-in for fresh in practically any recipe.

4. Marie Callender’s Confetti Birthday Cake Pie

In another side-by-side taste, this Confetti Birthday Cake Pie took the top spot for best Marie Callender’s cream pie. The pie, which is also a cake, is truly the best of both worlds. It has a crumbly crust (made from crushed cookies!) and a creamy vanilla center that reminded us of homemade pudding. The best part, though, is inarguably the big chunks of confetti cake and rainbow chips that finish it all off.

5. Wholly Wholesome Organic Traditional Pie Shells

After sampling our way through eight different frozen pie crusts (tough gig, we know), this is the only one we’ll buy. While not buttery per se, Wholly Wholesome’s Organic Traditional pie crust does have a well-balanced and toasty pastry flavor perfect for both sweet and savory pies. It’s both tender and flaky, yet strong enough to hold its shape when a wedge of pie is cut. The bottom of the crust was crisp, browned, and did not turn soggy even a day after baking. It also has a very short ingredient list, with no preservatives, dough conditioners, or color additives.

6. Chung’s Chicken Egg Rolls

Chung’s took the top spot in our frozen egg roll taste test. The company has been around for more than 40 years, and they hand roll each egg roll. And it shows! The wrapper is crispy and chewy, with just enough grease without being overwhelming; the filling is a mix of chicken and vegetables, with an undeniable savory quality. Bonus: Chung’s also includes a sweet-and-sour sauce packet.
