“I hate getting food in the mail,” said no one ever. Because getting food in the mail is fun! Especially when the food is unique and surprising. So this holiday season, instead of gifting yet another generic restaurant gift card, consider one of these food subscription services.

Each one is highly customizable (to fit your budget!) and sure to delight whoever’s checking the mail. They’ll either help people get dinner on the table, expand someone’s snacking horizons, or just be a welcome break from all those unwanted catalogs that keep showing up for no reason.

1. Comin’ Up Cozy Gift Set, from $30 a month at Candy Club

Getting candy in the mail is the exact opposite of getting bills in the mail. Meaning: People love it! Sign a sweet-toothed loved one up for Candy Club (you can pick between a one-, three-, or six-month plan) and they’ll get six containers of unique and interesting candies sent right to their door.

2. A Week of Dinners, from $56 at Plated

Meal kits were practically made for your brother who works long hours and never seems to have time to get to the grocery store but loves to cook. And Plated is one of our favorites. You can sign someone up to get two meals one week or you can go even bigger and gift an entire month’s worth of meals. When we wrote this, meal options included this Pan-Roasted Chicken, Sesame Beef Bowls, and a Crispy Mushroom Burger — all of which we were dying to try.

3. Simple Loose-Leaf Tea, $12 per box

Amazon also offers subscription boxes (because Amazon has all the things!). We love this tea box — which comes with four hand-packaged loose-leaf teas each month, plus tasting notes and reusable tea filters — for anyone on your list who needs to take it slower in 2019.

4. 24 Meals, from $129 at Butcher Box

The gift of Butcher Box is like sending someone their own personalized meat purveyor through the mail. You can choose to send someone a mixed or custom box, just beef, beef and chicken, or beef and pork. Then, they’ll get enough meat to prepare 24 meals (the math comes out to $5.38 per meal) for as many months as you want to send. All the meat is free of added antibiotics and hormones, and it’s humanely raised.

5. Tasting Gift Box, from $8 a month at Love with Food

Send your favorite snacker a new box of seven (or more!) unique treats a month. It’s also a good gift for folks who like to do good: For every snack box that’s delivered, the company donates at least one meal to an American family in need through a partnership with Feeding America.

6. Pickle of the Month Club, from $48 a month at Mouth

Did you know there’s such a thing as a pickle of the month club? There is! And it comes with three of the best pickled cukes, including one little oddball. Get this for your friend who is always asking for extra pickles on the side when you go out for burgers. You can sign her up for the year, six months, three months, or just a single delivery.

7. The Keto Box, from $34 a month at Cratejoy

So your aunt can’t stop talking about how she’s going to start the keto diet in January? Sign her up for this box and she’ll get seven to 10 low-carb goodies to help her stick to her new lifestyle. The offerings are spot-on, too. In this box alone, we see at least three things we love (Moon Cheese!) and the rest we’d totally want to try.

The folks over at Food52 are amazing curators, so we totally trust them when it comes to putting together this hot sauce subscription box. The subscription gets your spicy friend four shipments and 12 bottles total. All of them are high-quality, too. No gimmicky sauces that are too hot to eat!

9. Signature Cheese Box, $95 per month at Cheesemonger Box

Sign up your cheesiest loved one for this signature box. She’ll get 3.5 pounds of artisanal cheese, a box of fancy crackers, and a small-batch accompaniment like a jam, spread, or charcuterie. You can choose to send one box one time or set up a monthly subscription.
