Assuming you have any cheese leftovers hanging around after you assemble a cheese board (how?), the next step is figuring out how best to store it. The last thing you want to happen after splurging on a few of your favorite wedges of Humboldt Fog, Manchego, and smoked Gouda is to let them spoil or harden into inedible blocks before you can enjoy them to the fullest.

We know that fancy cheese is not cheap, so we’re here to wax poetic (hint hint!) about our favorite cheese storage solution that’s miles ahead of plastic wrap: Bee’s Wrap Cheese Wrap.

Did you know that if you throw cheese wedges into a container or suffocate them in plastic wrap, they will actually spoil faster? (BRB, going to go reassess my entire cheese drawer.) Bee’s Wrap, which lets your cheese breathe, is a natural alternative to plastic and will actually extend your cheese’s shelf life. Not only that, but these wraps are also washable, reusable for up to a year, and compostable. How? They’re made of organic cotton, beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin. To make them malleable to wrap around your cheese, all you have to do is warm each wrap with your hands to soften it. When it cools, it creates a natural seal.

We asked Jill Allen, the head of R&D for Tillamook County Creamery Association, to back us up on this and she totally agrees: “Cheese is living, which means you want to keep your cheese as well-preserved as when you purchased it. Cheese wraps allow oxygen to freely flow, giving cheese the proper moisture so it can breathe while continuing to age.”

Another benefit to Bee’s Wraps? They protect your cheese from absorbing the flavors (and smells) of any other foods in the fridge. According to Allen, “Cheese wraps prevent off flavors from developing from surrounding foods. The use of standard plastic containers for storage can create a plastic flavor note in your cheese. It also doesn’t allow your cheese to breathe which can cause the cheese to sweat and negatively impact the texture.”

Amateur cheesemongers and expert cheese eaters will want to stock up. Your cheese drawer will thank you for it.
