Richard and Lili have been living in the second floor apartment of their Montreal duplex for about six months, and one of their biggest projects was tackling a kitchen that was in desperate need of some modern touches.

They write that the whole apartment needed some TLC, but that the kitchen called for some smart updates to maximize put the small space to the best use. We definitely think their stellar remodel achieved that goal.

One of the first things we noticed is just how much lighter and more open the kitchen seems thanks to the light wood and chevron tile back splash behind the range. They chose to go with cabinets and a kitchen sink from IKEA and keep the original appliances to help keep the project within their budget.

Just off the immediate kitchen area is a little breakfast nook, which while functional wasn’t the most flexible use of space for the couple. Take a look at how they updated it:

Not only do they still have a comfortable spot to enjoy their morning coffee, they’ll also have more flexibility to adjust the space when they want to entertain.

Another major upgrade was the new walnut flooring that Richard and Lili installed throughout the kitchen and the rest of the apartment.
