Beer Review: Ruby Mild from Sam Adams

There are days when all you want to do once you walk in the door is pull on a comfy pair of jeans, flop on the couch, and have a beer (like, for instance…tonight). This Ruby Mild from Sam Adams is the beer you want for days like these. It’s not going to assault your senses with some crazy new hop or challenge your taste buds with layers and layers of flavor — it’s just a good drinkin’ beer. Period.

Beer Details: Sam Adams Ruby Mild from Boston Beer Company, Jamaica Plain, MA (English Mild Ale, 5.6% ABV, 25 IBU)

Appearance: Super clear with a deep amber hue and a glossy cap of foam.

Aroma: Caramel candies

Taste: This is the kind of beer that makes you sit back in your chair (or, you know, your couch) and say “Ahhhh….” It’s an smooth-sipping brew that’s as mild as a sleepy puppy — easy to love but not without character.

Each sip is a nice blend of toasty, caramelized malts with deeper nutty and earthy notes. It’s sweet, but never cloying, and there’s just enough hop bitterness to give the malts something to bump against. The finish is slightly sweet, but otherwise clean as a whistle.

At 5.6%, this is actually a bit alcoholic for a mild English style, but I’m not one to quibble. It’s enough that you can feel your muscles relax, but not so much that you’ll fall asleep before dinner.

Pair This Beer With: Mushrooms on Toast
