You Have to See How This Renter Nearly Doubled Her Kitchen Storage Space with This Simple Trick
People living in small spaces likely have their own organizational hacks. Did you purchase a multi-functional dining table? Or did you finally nail down the perfect way to display your spices? Regardless of what problem you’re solving, small-space dwellers all have to get creative at times.
And that’s precisely what Christina Goldschmidt, VP and head of product design at Etsy, did in her 859-square-foot New York City apartment’s kitchen.
She took advantage of vertical space and used baskets for storage.
When considering the kitchen storage space, Goldschmidt didn’t want only to use the kitchen cabinets. Instead, she turned her gaze upwards. “Use all of the vertical height that you can. Hang things on your walls. Put baskets on top of your cabinets. Always try to go to the ceiling as much as you can,” Goldschmidt writes.
Placing baskets on top of your kitchen cabinets has two benefits. For starters, it adds extra storage space without renovating an otherwise unused area; second, it hides any clutter or things you’d wish guests didn’t see. You could always take the organizing up a notch by labeling your baskets, too. If you’re looking for baskets similar to Goldschmidt’s, here’s a similar option.
She chose baskets that matched the kitchen cabinet color.
One reason the baskets on top of Goldschmidt’s kitchen cabinets seem to blend into the space is that she chose containers the same color as the surrounding space. If you want to add storage without drawing peoples’ attention to the bins, it’s a smart way to go.
So if you’re looking for a way to add storage without hammering, nailing, or installing anything, follow Goldschmidt’s clever hack. This smart choice isn’t the only interesting detail about her space. If you want to learn more, check out the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
