“Barbiecore” Decor Is Hot: Here’s How to Make It Work
As one of the most iconic pop culture figures of all time, it’s hard to deny Barbie’s everlasting influence across multiple generations. Not only does 2022 mark 60 years of the Barbie Dreamhouse, but the fictional blonde and her pals are experiencing a cultural renaissance thanks to the upcoming “Barbie” movie hitting theaters next year.
Naturally, fans are eager to infuse as much of Barbie’s signature colorful, playful spirit into their homes — hence the rise in popularity of Barbiecore decor, which includes pops of pink, whimsical touches, and nostalgic nods to Mattel’s most famous figure herself.
If you want to infuse Barbiecore into your very own Dreamhouse, the pros at Secret Linen Store have shared their top tips for taking on the trend. Of course, one of the easiest ways to live in your very own Barbie world is by adding plenty of pink. But you don’t have to paint your walls a bold shade of bubblegum if that’s just not your thing. Secret Linen Store co-founder Molly Freshwater recommends two Farrow & Ball shades — Setting Plaster and Pink Ground — for a softer, fresher spin on Barbie’s signature hue. Dusty shades of blush “give a mature feel to a room, whilst still gaining the playful softness that makes Barbiecore so popular. If pink walls just aren’t for you, then introducing the color through bed linens, towels, and throws is a quick and easy alternative,” notes Freshwater.
Of course, you can also keep things super subtle by incorporating scallops, frills, or small floral prints to your space, says Freshwater. “Scalloped and frill-edged bed linens are very popular at the moment and they’re a subtle way to bring a touch of femininity into the room. Alternatively, floral cushions or tablecloths are budget-friendly ways to update your living room or kitchen with these soft vibes.”
As one of the most nostalgic childhood figures, you’ll definitely want to infuse retro hints by way of vintage wall decor (such as postcards, prints, and photos), tasseled lampshades, vintage coffee table books, or old-fashioned landline phones — bonus points if they are in pastel shades, says Freshwater. “Keeping these subtle means that they don’t take over the room and just give the space a pop of fun.”
Another fun way to pay homage to Barbie is by way of cloud-like bedding and sofas to amp up the style and coziness in spades. “Although perhaps not ideal for the summer months, a top tip would be to double up on the duvets, so your bed looks perfectly cloud-like,” says Freshwater. “Using several pillows and cushions is also a great way to plump up your cozy bed or sofa, and they are an easy way to play with fun textures like faux fur or sheepskin in whites or pastels.”
