The cheat code for enhancing a lot of meals is avocado. The creamy pitted fruit can transform the most straightforward recipes into seemingly extravagant meals. Slice it up and lay it on a fried chicken sandwich, add it to a taco, or crumble it on a bacon salad. There’s a lengthy list of the different routes you can take. But there’s nothing worse than getting hyped up to use it, only for you to cut into it and encounter a sad, brown, mushy mess. It happens to the best of us, but a recent Instagram clip with nearly 121K views shares a few hacks you can try to prevent spoilage.

If you’re dealing with pre-sliced avocado, you can reach for a popular glass container that you likely already have in your kitchen to store it in. According to the Instagram clip, if you place one in a Mason jar sealed with a metal lid and keep it in the fridge, it’ll stay fresh for up to a week. Preserving it in chilly conditions helps prevent oxidation — or exposure to air — which causes a chemical reaction that turns the pitted fruit brown, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

For whole avocados, you’ll want to take a different route. In the clip, @thecrosslegacy instructs you to store unripe ones in your crisper drawer next to a few lemons; they will last for up to a month. The acidity from citrus peels can also help slow the oxidation process, which will allow you to keep them longer, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Now that you have a few hacks to try out to keep your avocado fresh for longer, you might as well fill up your Rolodex with recipes to use them in. Try them as the filling of deviled eggs, the base of a chocolate pudding, or the foundation of a creamy pasta sauce
