Happy 4th of July: A Letter from the Founder
Today is the 4th of July. This year the 4th falls on a lovely day of the week, a Thursday, giving everyone across the country, employers especially, a very good reason to take two days off instead of one, thus creating a very long weekend at home. Today is also Independence Day – the anniversary of our separation from the King of England nearly 250 years ago, however it is not the day on which the Declaration of Independence was actually signed.

The Jam Report: Dundee Orange Marmalade
Brand: Dundee Orange Marmalade Fruit: Seville Oranges Location: Scotland Rating: Addictive* Are you a marmalade lover? Then we have to tell you that out of all the marmalades you can easily find in stores, we like Dundee best. Perhaps it’s the big thick white glass bottles that make great pen holders when you’re done. Perhaps it’s the Seville oranges that have a great history as having been created from bitter Spanish oranges that no one wanted to eat.

Dear Readers, We launched the first responsive mobile design of The Kitchn and Apartment Therapy last night. It provides an optimal experience on any device (check it out right now by making your browser window smaller if you’re not on a phone already). It was inevitable, as we’ve watched our mobile readership grow significantly in the past 24 months. Every day more folks read our two sites via Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest off of their mobile devices.

Check Out Founder Maxwell’s Dream Kitchen Renovation
Back in the early spring of 2016 I tore down a little house my family had purchased 18 years earlier and, taking it on as finally my own and with money that I inherited when my father passed away, I rebuilt it from the ground up (actually below the ground, up) with the help of three wonderfully skilled people, John Berg (architect), Peter Germano (contractor) and Rebecca Robertson (interior designer). The project took nearly two years, allowing me to move in by Christmas 2018.

Happy Fourth of July from Maxwell @ Kitchn!
Waking this morning and walking across the Manhattan Bridge to the office, it was remarkable how quiet the city was. It is a particularly unique thing to have a peaceful day in New York City, so I’m savoring it and using it to bring back something we haven’t done in years: wishing you a happy holiday. When our sites began in 2004, we used to start an open thread after linking to some good thoughts by others on each national holiday.

Tiny Start-Up Count. It Is Helping Us Crush Our Fitness Goals
You might think that sitting behind computers all day makes us soft, but you’d have to think again! Here in our NY offices and also remotely, all of our employees are part of a super-cool digital wellness network that tracks our exercise, prods us along (we can compete with other companies), and keeps up our fitness awareness. Founded by my brother, Oliver Ryan, Count. It is an awesome addition to our company culture, so I’m proud to share this short video he just made. Count.

Piece by Piece: Tableware by Maxwell Ryan & Canvas Home
I love good design. My new tableware line with Canvas Home is meant to be just that, not just another set of plates and glasses, but modular, mixable, design solution and the only set your home will ever need. With the launch this past week, I wanted to give you the skinny on each piece. Why? What’s it for? Why is it cool?

Introducing: Tableware by Maxwell Ryan & Canvas Home
This month a dream of mine has come true. I’ve returned to my first love: actually designing something. After many years of visiting other people’s homes, reviewing resources and products, I’ve teamed up with someone I trust immensely, Andrew Corrie of Canvas Home, to design a line of objects that I will have in my own home.

Top Butter Keepers: Marble, Cordon Bleu, Lee Daniels & 3 More
Hard butter when you want to spread it on hot piping toast or pancakes, or even when you want to slather it on top of a roast chicken is one of life’s little annoyances. It’s SO wonderful to work with soft butter in the kitchen and butter keepers or butter bells make it easy. This stunning one up top is Melissa Clark’s own and solid marble.

Happy Memorial Day, Everyone!
It’s Memorial Day, the Holiday of Flowers. I woke this morning early to take this picture of sunrise over the garden and yard I’ve been working on all weekend. It’s been raining and cold out here on Long Island, but the air is fresh and wonderful, like a billion ions all super-charged for new growth. The greens are greener than I’ve ever seen them, the moisture is needed and the summer is assuredly in our future. What’s it like where you are??

Easy Dinner Recipe: Viking Chicken
I’ve been doing a lot of cooking this week, and it’s been really nice. When my marriage ended a year ago, I was suddenly thrown back into cooking by myself again, and at first I was lost at sea. I had forgotten everything I’d known — the touch and the feel of cooking — that I’d had ten years earlier when I was single.

Mexican Bottle Glassware Handmade by Marfa Brands
Marfa Brands got its start with handmade soaps. Then, about two years ago, creator Ginger Griffice started making glassware out of reused glass bottles from nearby Mexico. In Mexico, the bottles are reused again and again, not recycled as they are here… [via Apartment Therapy]

Zabar’s Housewares Dept.
There’s nothing like an old standby. At the center of Upper West Side Levantine food culture is Zabar’s. Started in 1934 by Louis and Lillian Zabar this is a family operation and there is always “a Zabar in the store.”We all know and love it for their gourmet groceries and prepared foods that are perfect for Central Park picnics. But have you seen the second floor? It is one of the best stocked kitchen supply stores in the city.
