The Store-Bought Guacamole Taste Test: We Tried 6 Brands and Ranked Them
Guacamole is so easy to make that it’s almost silly to buy it from the store. But sometimes you just don’t have 10 minutes to chop and mash your way to homemade. Maybe you’re heading straight to a party from work, or grabbing some snacks on the road while heading for the beach, or maybe you’d rather focus your efforts on making an entrée and not an app? Besides, you can’t always get your hands on perfectly ripe avocados right when you need them.

A New Study Corroborates the Dangerous Link Between Sugar & Cancer
We all know we’re not supposed to eat too much sugar. It’s bad for our teeth, say our dentist. It’s bad for our waistlines and our hearts, say our doctors. But some scientists are now saying too much sugar is also bad for us on a much more molecular level; sugar may trigger the growth of cancer cells. All human cells, even cancerous ones, require energy to grow. This energy often comes from the glucose, present in the foods we eat and metabolized to create new cells.

I Tried the “Simplest Diet in the World” for One Week and It Was Still Too Annoying for Me
While I was growing up, my mom was always trying out the latest diet plan du jour. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slim Fast. There was the grapefruit diet and the cabbage soup diet (that was pretty memorable), and probably a few others I’m forgetting. So when I became a teen, it was only natural that I would dabble in those fad diets too. We were both plenty active. She’d take me along to her aerobics classes. We’d sweat along to Jane Fonda tapes in the living room.

Why a $300 Pancake-Printing Machine Is Totally Worth It
Those Mickey Mouse pancakes with chocolate chips for eyes? So analog. We live in a digital world now, with self-driving cars and virtual coins. Can’t we digitize our pancakes? In a word, yes. We can rebuild Mickey Mouse, better than before. We have the technology. In fact, it’s called the PancakeBot, and it’ll only set you back $300. You can even add one to your cart the next time you’re shopping for oven mitts at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Yes, it’s that mainstream.

I Made Kombucha in a Super-Fancy French Fermenting Jar and Here’s What I Thought
I absolutely love kombucha. What I absolutely don’t love is paying $5 a bottle for it — especially now that I’ve gotten my husband and my youngest daughter hooked on it too. With them guzzling down my precious stash, kombucha has morphed from a virtuous, gut-friendly mode of hydration to a flat-out budget buster. Instead of giving up the tart, refreshing, fermented tea drink, I decided to try making it myself.

I Tried the Cult-Favorite Grilling Accessory I Keep Seeing on TV — Here’s What I Thought
I have all the tools I could possibly need for my gas grill — a cast iron plancha, remote thermometer, metal box for wood chips — and I love them all. There’s one thing I never really loved, though: the stainless steel vegetable basket. It definitely keeps small foods from falling through the grates, but it’s too small itself to effectively grill these items without crowding. However, a new breed of copper grill mats aims to solve this problem.

I Ate Every Veggie Tot I Could Get My Hands On. Here’s What I Thought.
There’s a special magic to tater tots. Like french fries, they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but their chubby little nugget shape offers an entirely different eating experience. And they’re the key ingredient to my favorite punny snack, tot-chos (nachos made with tots instead of chips). Adding to the brilliance that is tater tots, some frozen food brands have taken the concept and applied it to veggies with a bit more nutritional oomph than pure potatoes.

An Honest Review of 3 Meal Kit Recipes for the Grill
Looking to ease the dinnertime dilemma with a meal kit sent right to your door? You’re in luck, because you’ve now got more than a dozen companies to choose from — and counting. Deciding which one to choose is the hard part. They’ve all got the packaging and delivery down pat, but it’s what’s inside the box that counts. The big question is: Do the contents satisfy your cravings or leave you wishing you had ordered takeout?

I Made the Internet-Famous “Ripple Cookie” & Here’s How It Went
In a recent piece in the New York Times, Julia Moskin writes about the internet-famous “ripple cookie.” According to Moskin, this cookie is crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and “ringed, like a tree trunk — as if a chunk of chocolate had been dropped in the center and somehow made waves out to the edges.” I mean, who could resist the lure of crispy-chewy perfection? Of course we had to try it.

The “Best Meatloaf Ever” Is Made with Trader Joe’s Ingredients — Here’s How It Tastes
If you want to make meatloaf, you’ve got your choice of thousands recipes with an infinite number of variations, and chances are they all purport to be the “best” one. Recently, I stumbled on one recipe that even put that proud boast right in the title: “Best Meatloaf Ever.” It was the digital equivalent of someone throwing down the gauntlet. “Oh, really?” I thought to myself while checking out the photo of a bacon-lashed loaf.

The 6 Best Cities to Eat Donuts in the United States
Confession: I have a donut obsession. Whenever I find myself in a new place, the first thing I do is find the donuts. I’ve donut-crawled my way through a bakers’ dozen cities over the years — at least. Here are six of my very favorite donut destinations, in no particular order. The windy city doesn’t mess around when it comes to donuts.

The Best Ice Cream in California: A Road Trip
A road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway is nearly as American as driving cross-country on Route 66. However, if your interests are culinarily minded (and let’s be specific here — we’re talking about folks who really, really love ice cream), we suggest you head north from San Francisco instead of south.

We Challenge You to Do This Ice Cream Road Trip in a Single Day
If you scream for ice cream (and don’t we all?), you can experience all the cold treats that the great state of New York has to offer in a single day. Start in Brooklyn, where everything is small-batch, including the ice cream. Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan, where inventive, often wacky scoops rule the ice cream parlor stool, then meander through the quaint towns and farmlands upstate and get your fix of custard and soft serve.

The 5 Best Things to Pick Up at Costco for New Parents
When I was a new mom, finding time for a quick shower was a challenge, let alone finding time to make a meal. And I needed lots of meals. Somehow breastfeeding gave me an insatiable appetite that probably could have put a high school football player to shame. That why, of all the gifts I received, the one I remember most fondly was a care package a mom friend dropped on my porch.

I Tried All the Cream Cheese Options Out There. These Are the Two Best Ones at the Grocery Store.
I used to think that all cream cheeses were the same. Each one, just a white brick (or frosting-like tub) of a creamy spread so mild in flavor it seems almost silly to call it cheese. Cream cheese, to me, is either an ingredient (i.e., cheesecake) or a vehicle (i.e., lox and bagels), but not something to be savored on its own, like, say, a great aged cheddar or even a creamy chevre.

I Tried Every Pack of Bacon I Could Find and Now This Is the Only One I’ll Buy
There are few things more disappointing than sub-par bacon. You get your tastebuds all revved up while you’re cooking it — because all bacon smells amazing when it cooks — but then you take a bite and instead of smoky-salty-porky bliss, you get greasy flab or dry, bland cardboard. It’s a classic bait-and-switch! To find out which brands are worth gracing your Sunday morning brunch spread, I took a deep dive in the bacon aisle at several supermarkets.

The Best Almond Milk to Buy at the Grocery Store
When you’re cutting out dairy (or just trying to consume a little less of it) and you want to find an alternative to milk that tastes just like the real thing, almond milk is your friend. It has a natural sweetness and creamy texture that’s incredibly similar to dairy milk, and some brands don’t retain any of the nut’s natural flavor at all.

The Best, Least-Gimmicky Pickle-Flavored Snacks You Can Find at the Grocery Store
I can’t imagine my life, let alone my fridge, without pickles. I love them all. Tart ones, funky fermented ones, classic dill, hot and spicy, bread-and-butter. Right now in my fridge I’ve got jars of relish, spears, sandwich slabs, and coins, not to mention all the non-cucumber stuff like Indian lime pickles and kimchi. And for a while now, I’ve been seeing dill pickles go far beyond the jars, flavoring everything from potato chips to sunflower seeds.
