The 10 Best Birthday Gifts for a Taurus or a Gemini
We’re almost halfway through this yearlong series (ICYMI: We’ve been asking astrologers to help us put together the ultimate shopping guides based on people’s zodiac signs) and a trip around the sun, and I’m starting to wonder how we ever shopped for birthday gifts before consulting the stars? This month, Theresa Reed, aka The Tarot Lady and author of the forthcoming book, Astrology for Real Life — A No B.S.

People Are Ditching Their Upper Kitchen Cabinets and I Don’t Think I Like It
Upper cabinets are starting to disappear from kitchens, and I’m not sure how to feel about it. It all started with the open-shelving phenomenon, and now, in some cases, it has morphed into this total lack of anything structural above the countertops. On the one hand, it is visually beautiful. You can really go to town with tile — think an uninterrupted, ceiling-high wall of subways or a bold geometric backsplash.

Karen Christino, author of Your Wedding Astrologer: How to Plan the Perfect Wedding Based on Your Zodiac Sign, came to the rescue yet again with some great gift recommendations based on the stars. Here’s what made her list for all those Pisces and Aries out there.

The 7 Deadly Sins of Trying to Recreate a “Fixer Upper”-Style Kitchen
Figuring out a way to get your home designed by the Joanna Gaines herself is tricky. Emulating her style is about as close as you can get these days, and honestly, it’s not as easy as it looks on “Fixer Upper.” Unless you have a warehouse filled with vintage treasures, your own line at Target, or a partner in crime like Chip to do your demo. It’s tough to strike that perfect “Farmhouse Modern” chord without making some mistakes along the way.

The Surprising Kitchen Trend We’re Starting to See More and More
Fact: I don’t just write here. I’m also a reader of Kitchn and Apartment Therapy, and my go-to is the house tour section. There’s always something new to see, and you can really start to spot trends emerging from the sheer volume of homes showcased there. One thing that I noticed in a recent Atlanta house straight-up put a smile on my face: a bright-orange kitchen sink, beautifully situated in a corner of the counter. And it just screamed personality.

This Smart Kitchen Hack Will Make Your Nice Candles Last Longer
Scent can be polarizing. I find you’re either all about it — and want different candles, diffusers, plug-ins, and room sprays throughout your space — or it’s not for you at all, and everything from your laundry detergent to your dish soap is unscented. I definitely fall in the former group. I live for a good scented candle in my living room, bedroom, bathroom, and even kitchen. I’m someone who burns candles year-round — not just on the holidays.

The Divisive Kitchen Trend That’s Not Going Away Any Time Soon
We can’t all have new custom cabinetry or high-end appliances equipped with smart technology. But one design-forward thing pretty much anyone can do in their kitchen is add a runner to the mix. In fact, that, plus swapping in patterned tea towels, and adding a bold Le Creuset Dutch oven to the stovetop are the three things pretty much every stylist does when propping a homeowner’s kitchen to shoot it. So you know this is going to make your space look more polished.

Frantically realizing all the stuff you don’t have but totally need if you’re going to pull off a successful holiday party! It’s true, party hosts do need to have a lot on hand. I Tried 5 of Trader Joe’s Newest Holiday Treats and Sweets
Now that Thanksgiving is so far gone, it’s about time we traded pumpkin spice for peppermint, no? At least, that’s what it feels like happened overnight at Trader Joe’s. I hit my favorite grocery store up on Black Friday while I was visiting my parents and the shelves were brimming with Christmas cookies and other seasonal snacks.

The IKEA Classic That Works in Every Single Room
Some furnishings really earn their keep in your home — multitaskers like poufs, side tables, and storage ottomans come to mind. They’re a surface for drinks, a spot to stash stuff, a makeshift seat when you’re throwing a party or having friends over. And then there are those style chameleons that can hold their own and adapt to any setting or space, and for that, they are invaluable. IKEA’s picture rails definitely fall into that latter category.

7 Mistakes You Make When It Comes to Buying and Burning Candles
I consider myself something of a candle connoisseur. I’ve smelled a ton over the years and lit plenty, from Diptyque to Yankee and everything in between. Tapers, votives, you name it — there’s some kind of candle in practically every room of my home. But I’ve never given much thought to my burning technique, that is, until a recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Turns out the country music capital also knows a thing or two about getting (candles) lit.

10 Ingenious Kitchen Buys That’ll Keep Your Countertops Clear
Having clutter-free countertops is one of the easiest ways to fake a clean kitchen. I’m not advocating for never rolling up your sleeves and scrubbing down your cookspace. I’m merely suggesting a shortcut for keeping it together in between cleans. The trick is finding the right gadgets that store your stuff neatly — without taking up tons of real estate.

The Unexpected Home Buy I Always Get at Costco
I’ve always been a fan of Costco. As a kid, I used to love the 12-packs of muffins from their bakery section, and I was always down for a trip there because that meant I’d get ice cream — well, Kirkland-Signature Non-Fat Swirl Frozen Yogurt, but I digress. My favorite FILA sweatshirt and Adidas track pants were from Costco, and had I held onto these pieces, I’d probably be rocking them again right now.

My New Favorite $5 Seasonal Trader Joe’s Find
I’m a grazer — it’s probably one of my biggest diet downfalls. I’d rather pick on a couple of little things every few hours than down a heavy meal. (I blame it partially on the fact that I haven’t had a job that actually encouraged taking a lunch hour in more than a decade.) Which brings me to a recent road trip I took. I obviously needed car snacks! And Trader Joe’s was clearly the place to go for such provisions.

The Newest Trader Joe’s Beauty Product I’m Totally Obsessed With
I try my darnedest to avoid making eye contact with the Trader Joe’s beauty section because I never really need anything from it. And most of the stuff isn’t travel size, which I prefer when trying new products for the first time. (My skin can be pretty finicky, so I like to test things out before fully committing to them.) Plus, I have a bunch of go-tos for basically everything already anyway. But more often than not, those shelves just draw me in.

I Tried 5 of Trader Joe’s Latest and Greatest Pumpkin-Flavored Groceries
Just when you thought #pumpkineverything had reached peak saturation, Trader Joe’s has raised the stakes (again) with even more pumpkin offerings than last year. We’ve already told you about a couple, but there are more, people! Many, many more. So naturally, when October rolled around this week, I did as any card-carrying fall-lover might do and headed to my local TJ’s (in flannel, of course) and filled my cart with a little taste of the season.

5 Surprising Ways a Hair Tie Can Help in the Kitchen
I’ve got tons of hair ties floating around — my go-tos are Goody Ouchless without the metal band. They come in packages of 37 and upwards, but they still seem to always disappear. If you have long hair, I know you hear me on this. So I’m constantly buying new packages and picking up plain single ties at the gym. I tend to keep one on my wrist at all times. One night, when I couldn’t seem to find a proper chip clip for a bag of almonds, I used my spare.

This Crackle Glaze Tile Trend Is Taking Over the Kitchen and Bath
#Ihavethisthingwithtiles, and it’s sort of unfortunate because I’ve never actually picked any of my own. I fell in love with subway tiles nearly a decade ago, and I was crushing hard on those matte patterned cement tiles that popped up a couple years ago. I’m even into faux “wood” larger scale ceramic tiles and teeny tiny, mesh-backed penny tiles. And I’m not mad at a fish scale or arabesque shape either.

The Magical Product That Cleans My Pots While I Sleep
I hate doing dishes. I also don’t have a dishwasher, which is a good thing because I hate doing dishes so much, I’d probably just throw everything in there and hope for the best. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not super willing to stand at the sink and scrub a pan — especially after a tough day! All that’s to say that I’m always looking for ways to cut my dishwashing time.

The 8 Best Kinds of Groceries to Buy at T.J.Maxx
Nobody gets fired up about T.J.Maxx quite like I do. I mean, when was the last time you scheduled your weekend around hitting your local store? Or sought out a TJX — or three — when traveling just to see how different the inventory is compared to the store you usually go to? (Fun fact: T.J.Maxx stores in Florida actually offer a 10 percent senior discount on EVERYTHING on Mondays. Forget Disney World — next vacay, grab a grandparent and get your shop on in the Sunshine State.

8 Things Professional Designers Never Spend More than $10 On
Yeah, I know. You want those pretty Diptyque and Le Labo vessels in your shelfies. But if you light candles a lot or want to put a bunch throughout your home, you probably have no business spending $60+ on every one that you buy. Maybe splurge on a designer candle for your coffee table (or your bathroom area), and everywhere else, stick to sub-$10 ones. “Candles are the perfect accent to instantly change the mood of any room,” says designer Lauren Martin.

The $6 Trader Joe’s Find Your Kitchen and Bathroom Have Been Missing
We’ve sung the praises of Fouta (aka Turkish towels, Peshtemal, or Hammam) before. They’re lightweight and thin, which makes them great for folding and storing, but still pretty absorptive. If they’re authentic, the cotton gets softer with every wash. They come in a bunch of shades, perfect for adding a pop of color to any space that needs it.

The $3 Trader Joe’s Find That Tricks My Boyfriend into Eating Better
Did you read my ode to the humble air fryer? If not, let me bring you up to speed: Basically, I try to eat healthfully as much as possible; my boyfriend, however, is less concerned about that. In fact, he says he’s “allergic” to greens. So I’m always searching for groceries, ingredients, and recipes that are nutritious enough for me, and tasty enough for him. (Actually, let’s say tasty enough for me, too. It’s not like I want to eat cardboard!

This Smart Midwestern Blogger Figured Out How to Hide the Two Ugliest Things in the Kitchen
What are the two ugliest things in any kitchen? Think really hard. The answer (at least in my book)? Light switches and outlets. Maybe renovators spend some time thinking about where they should go, but aside from that, they’re usually such an afterthought! And I’m guessing many of us just inherited them with our home when we bought it or signed the lease. When I walk into a kitchen, I don’t necessarily want to see electric outlets or switch plates.

The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Drinking More Water
Hydration is pretty important. (Understatement of the year alert!) It’s part of the cure for so many things — jet lag, hangovers, and even hunger pangs, in some cases — and it’s oh-so-vital to the body, which we’re always reminded is up to 60 percent water anyway. So why is it so darn difficult to actually drink enough of it? Officially, the USDA recommends between two to almost four liters a day for adults depending on age, sex, and health status.

People Can Say What They Want — I Love My Air Fryer
I’m in love with an appliance, and I’m ready to go public as being pro-air fryer. I’m sure you’ve heard of them and you’re almost definitely curious. Maybe you’re even a hater. I kinda was myself. Frying — with air? Is it healthier than deep frying? Healthy-ish? Or an infomercial load of crap?

This $4 Hack Will Save You from Bad Airport Salads
I’m no stranger to testing the TSA’s boundaries when traveling with food. You’re talking to the girl who figured out how to pack hard-boiled eggs on ice to eat at the gate. I thought I took the title for Over-the-Top Airport Food Packer … until I was at a party and someone mentioned bringing a salad kit on board for dinner. She said she’d pour the dressing right into the bag and eat it in her seat — just like a Frito Pie. Wait, how had I not thought of that?

How I Make Sure I Have a Healthy Morning When I’m Traveling
When you’re traveling, most things are out of your control — the weather, equipment malfunctions, your fellow seatmates, delays, the price of (questionable) food options, the amount of healthy food options — but a couple years ago (during my first and only non-cheating stint of Whole30), I figured out a way to take charge of some of those elements. My life hack? I never travel without a specially packed container of hard-boiled eggs. Here’s how it works.

5 Brilliant Ways to Use a Lazy Susan
We all already know what a lazy Susan can do for a pantry or a fridge. And we know that a special built-in lazy Susan can keep a corner cabinet from being totally wasted space. Check them out and give one of these ideas a whirl. First on deck: This preppy striped serving situation from Ashley of Sugar & Cloth.

3 Greens That Make Easy (and Pretty) Centerpieces
Well, it’s not peony season at Trader Joe’s just yet. And ranunculus and anemone aren’t particularly cheap or plentiful either, so what’s a girl supposed to do for a dinner party centerpiece? You could go the route of supermarket carnations or roses, but if you’re looking to try something a little different and springy, why not give plants a go? Greenery is the Pantone Color of the Year, after all. Follow these bloggers’ leads for your next gathering.

3 Lessons to Steal from This Classy St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Party
As an Irish girl, it pains me to say this, but St. Patrick’s Day decorations can get cheesy pretty fast. I guess it has something to do with leprechauns and people’s penchant for dying things green that shouldn’t be. Still, there are some creative folks out there doing St. Patrick’s Day parties right. And the best example just might be this chic dinner party thrown by our friend Natasha Lawler.

7 Ways to Add Gold to Any Birthday Party
Maybe we’ve been watching too many red-carpet specials (to be fair, it is awards show season), but we can’t get enough sparkly, shiny gold stuff. Gold salad servers? Sure! A gold crock to hold those salad servers? Duh! Gold lettuce? Why isn’t there gold lettuce? Gold is always fun — and it’s especially fun for birthday festivities. You could show a little restraint with a touch of gold here and touch of gold there. Or you could add all the gold.

Would You Put Your Kitchen on the Second Floor?
When homeowners Judy and Don sat down with their architect, Gary Tran of Tran Architecture, to redesign their Houston abode, they made one huge (and surprising) decision: to flip the layout. They put the kitchen and living room on the second floor and all the bedrooms on the first floor. This way, the public spaces would have a view over the treetops. They also kept the bedrooms on the smaller side to force the family to hang out together in the common rooms. (Sneaky!

7 Ways to Bring Your Backyard Movie Night Indoors
There’s something magical about watching a movie under the stars. But when it’s cold or snowy, the great outdoors just won’t cut it.
