Last week I attended the 2013 Architectural Digest Home Design Show, which is a small trade show featuring a carefully curated selection of home and kitchen brands. A Must For Bakers: Marble Pastry Board
Cooks who work on marble countertops already know that marble is great for working with pastry and chocolate. When chilled, a marble surface is ideal for keeping dough from sticking — particularly when you’re not keen on adding too much extra flour. If you’re an avid baker, it’s an essential tool to have in your kitchen. And you can get one for around $30!

Look! A Huge World Map (and Purple Table) in the Dining Room
This schoolhouse-inspired dining room is so fun, with its floor-to-ceiling world map, vintage chairs, and purple (!) dining table. If this inspires you to paint your own dining table (or other piece of furniture) consider this tip from Jenny Brandt, the table’s owner……get to know a car painter! She tells Design*Sponge in a recent post that her father owns an auto body shop, and always mixes the leftover paint to get custom colors.

Kitchen Before & After: A Standard Builder’s Kitchen Gets a Better Layout
Melissa (of home blog The Inspired Room) knew that her kitchen was “certainly not the worst kitchen ever,” but she wanted it to feel like her kitchen, not like a generic builder’s kitchen. So after three years of living with it as is, she took the plunge and made it her own, focusing on giving it a better layout and a lot more charm. See the ‘After’ photo below:So pretty and fresh!

Cambria’s Playlist: My Mostly Mellow Indie Dinner Party Mix, With Some Pep & Quirk
In college, my roommates and I had spontaneous dance parties where we’d all bust a move (and bust out laughing), but nowadays my dance moves are limited to shimmying slowly to the couch to avoid spilling my glass of wine. To that end, my dinner party playlist is a mostly laid-back affair — mellow enough that everyone can easily talk over it, but not too chill that you feel like falling asleep.

Kitchen Before & After: Cathy’s Impressive Craigslist-Sourced Kitchen Renovation
Kitchn reader Cathy was not a fan of her outdated 1980s kitchen. The layout was terrible and it had hardly any cabinets. But she lived with until she could afford to renovate, which finally happened after she refinanced her house. Her renovation is pretty spectacular, in no small part because she tracked down most of her dream elements — a 48″ Viking range, a French door refrigerator, mahogany and Carrara marble countertops!

How do you take your water? Straight up? With a lemon twist? Maybe strawberries are your thing. Yes, water is always refreshing on its own, but it enters ahhhh-inducing territory when you throw in some fruit or herbs. These pitchers make it easy. They all have a special compartment to hold the fruit, which means you just lift it up and out when you’re done infusing. Say hello to summer sipping on the porch! 1 Primula Infuser Pitcher, Flavor It 3-in-1 Beverage System, $29.

3 Reasons Why You Should Start Using Lab Beakers In the Kitchen
I’m married to a scientist, so that fact that I haven’t thought of this until now is kind of embarrassing. I currently have a 1000ml Pyrex beaker (well, technically a flask) that I brought home from a wedding. (The bride and groom — also scientists — used them as flower vases at the reception.) I’d been using it as a vase, too, when suddenly it dawned on me. These are actually perfect prep tools for cooking!

Chic and (Not) Shiny: Matte Black Kitchen and Dining Products
I absolutely love the smooth chicness of anything matte black, particularly in the kitchen. With so much that’s already bright and shiny in that room — stainless steel appliances! Shimmering tile! Glossy ceramic plates! — I find matte textures a welcome diversion. They’re understated yet still glamorous. Here are a few matte black kitchen and dining things I’ve had my eye on lately, from a simple faceted vase to a mind-blowing Bertazzoni range.

10 Pretty Domed Cake Stands & Keepers

5 Awesome White Kitchen Ranges
White appliances are making a big comeback in the kitchen, which isn’t surprising when you consider how popular white kitchens are. One reader asked us to round up a few particularly awesome-looking white ranges, which I’ve done here — all gorgeous and gleaming. Note: the word “awesome” should be taken for its true meaning here, i.e. something that inspires awe, because when you see the prices on these ranges, that’s exactly what you’ll feel. 1.

Kitchen Before & After: Cecelia’s ‘Making Better Use of the Space’ Kitchen Renovation
Kitchn reader Cecelia and her family live in a 1918 stucco Mediterranean Revival raised-basement home in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans. Since 1918, it has undergone two significant renovations, the second of which occurred after Hurricane Katrina. The renovations weren’t terrible, but they didn’t make good use of the space — the setup didn’t even have room for a kitchen table!

Perfectly Punchy: Neon Rimmed Walnut Trays and Platters by David Rasmussen
A beautiful wooden tray or platter is an entertaining staple. You can use one to serve appetizers, display glasses alongside a pitcher of cool iced tea, or serve breakfast in bed! Art for the Beer Geek: Abstract Prints Teach Beer Drinkers About Hop Varieties

Kitchen Before & After: A Cookbook Author Transforms His 1950s Kitchen
After spending two years cooking and recipe testing in his 1950s kitchen, cookbook author Chris Reynolds knew the time was right to redo his kitchen. As he tells us, it was “while baking, at least, three recipes a day” that he was able to plan out his perfect kitchen — something timeless, free of gimmicks or trendy finishes. Cheap & Useful: Amco Stainless Steel Cooking Measurement Magnets
Some measurement equivalents I can do in my head, no problem. But others trip me up a little. I’ve been known to google conversions a time or two, which is inconvenient and silly. A better solution? A practically indestructible stainless steel refrigerator magnet that lays it all out for me.These heavy-duty, no-fuss conversion magnets from Amco are great. I particularly like the recipe divider magnet (the first photo) which divides or multiplies recipes in halves or thirds.

This Is What Thousands of Spawning Salmon Look Like
Are you ready to see something amazing? While visiting the Macauley Salmon Hatchery in Juneau, Alaska last week, on a trip with the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute I witnessed a horde of 120,000 spawning chum salmon, a mass of fins and scales, all rippling together in an aquatic swan song. Did you know that salmon die right after they spawn? Here’s what else I learned: Chum salmon live for four years, and near the end of their life, they return to their place of birth to spawn.

Sitting Pretty: Perch Counter Stools from West Elm
A couple months ago I moved to a new city, a new apartment, and a kitchen that came with two very sad black mesh counter stools. (How sad? Food-encrusted-and-stained sad.) I’ve been keeping my eye out for a replacement set, and the Perch stools from West Elm are currently a favorite.I love the mix of powder-coated iron and teak wood. And do you see the angled bottom? That’s for resting your feet — a necessity for any stool, in my opinion.

Kitchen Details: Brushed Brass Cabinet Pulls Against Light Blue Cabinets
I don’t know what jumped out at me first when I saw this photo: the absolutely perfect shade of grayish blue on the cabinets, the elegant brass pulls, or the striped linen tea towel casually pulling it all together. Shiny or polished brass would look too glaring in this instance, but the matte brushed brass is all class, and works so well with the cool tones of the cabinets. I think it’s such a lovely alternative to stainless steel in this case, which would be the predictable choice.

Wire and Metal Mesh Dining Room Chairs
There is something so simple, so unfussy about wire dining room chairs. Yes, they can feel a little too cold in an all-modern setting, but I love them around a wooden dining table. The juxtaposition of hard metal and warm wood creates the perfect contrast. I wouldn’t mind seeing any one of these 10 chairs around my table, from the design classics (oh yes, they’re a little pricey) to more affordable options from places like CB2, Blu Dot, and Industry West.

Kitchen Before & After: A 1970s Kitchen Gets Open Shelving and Safer Appliances
Kitchn reader Heather knew the time had come to remodel her 1970s kitchen when she started smelling gas: “Our oven smelled like gas for the first 10 minutes after being turned on, and the outside got as hot as the inside, which was too dangerous for a child, and we have a 4-year-old,” Heather tells us. So, inspired by this kitchen, she set about to design something a little more airy and open. What a change!

Owls on Towels! Lapuan Kankurit Tea Towels & Textiles from FinnStyle
I would still think these towels are terribly cute even if I couldn’t say “owls on towels!” — although that does make me like them more. Their kitchen textiles don’t just feature owls; there are also sheep, forest animals, and birch tree designs. Even better?

The Whole Spices I Stock In My Pantry
Day 5 Task: Restock ingredients I knew what I wanted to do for this task right from the start. Since moving, my mortar and pestle has sat, unused and sad-looking, on my pantry shelf. Well, ok. A Smoke Alarm That Talks To You? That’s the Latest Design from Nest
Emily’s post yesterday about fire extinguishers reminded me that you can never be too careful in the kitchen. I would say the same goes for smoke alarms. I (guiltily) admit to sometimes disabling my smoke alarm when I cook just to avoid setting it off and having to deal with the annoying, unstoppable beeping. But this new smoke and carbon monoxide detector from Nest is pretty great. For one, it talks to you before it starts beeping!
