I’m Lowering My Grocery Budget by Another $100 a Month — Here’s How I’m Going to Pull It Off
I’ve been closely tracking my family’s grocery spending for well over 10 years now (nerd alert!) — and it’s been, um, paying off. Staying on top of things and keeping a low grocery budget has enabled us to get out of debt, stay that way, help our kids pay for college, and even save up for extended European vacations.

An IKEA Hack for Creating a Breakfast Nook, Even in the Smallest of Spaces
If you’re a renter, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that you get what you get and you don’t get upset — meaning, there’s not much you can do to customize or amend the design of your unit. Well, if you’re Heather Knight-Willcock, you get creative and hack your way to a “built-in” dining nook.

Recipe: 30-Minute Creamy Garlic Mushroom Pork Chops
If you typically save pork chops for weekend dinner guests, that’s about to change. These chops are golden-brown on the outside, perfectly juicy on the inside, and taste like a little luxury — but are simple enough for even the busiest of weeknights. They come together easily on the stovetop in just about half an hour. Oh, and did I mention they’re bathed in a creamy garlic mushroom sauce?

A Simple (Yet Ingenious) Trick for the Best-Ever Cornbread
Cornbread is one of those versatile side dishes that can be made in pretty much any vessel you like. You can scoop the batter into muffin cups (or mini muffin cups!), spread it into a square brownie pan, dollop it into a cute cornstick pan (what we used when I was growing up), or, my personal favorite, pour it into a preheated cast iron skillet.

35 Productive Things You Can Do in the Kitchen This Weekend Instead of Spending Money
When the weekend comes and we find ourselves with a minute or two of downtime, it’s easy to get tempted by online shopping, restaurants we’ve been dying to try, and recipes with laundry lists of ingredients that no one keeps on hand. What do all of these things have in common, though? They all cost money! And sometimes, we just don’t want to/can’t/shouldn’t spend even a single dollar. That’s where this list comes in.

PSA: Your Cutting Board Is Too Small – And It’s a Big Problem
For all the talk around wood versus plastic, there’s very little talk about the SIZE of cutting boards. And this is one case where size really does matter. One of the biggest knife-related mistakes we see time and time again? People opting for cutting boards that are too small. A too-small cutting board is not only awkward to use, but it can also be unsafe! We’ve all done it before: You’ve pulled out a little guy, thinking you just have to mince some garlic.

10 Grocery Store Etiquette Rules You May Be Breaking
Every grocery store is a little bit like the Animal Kingdom. Among the aisles, there is a natural order that cannot be disturbed, lest the entire ecosystem fails to function. All it takes it one rogue shopper to disrupt the pecking order and throw off the whole shebang. Don’t be that person. But how, you ask? Simply don’t commit ANY of the following crimes, aka the 10 cardinal sins of grocery shopping.

This House Is Only 200 Square Feet. Here’s What the Kitchen Looks Like.
America’s fascination with unconventional living arrangements (ahem, tiny homes) is showing no signs of slowing down. It used to be that the only time I ever came across a tiny home was while watching HGTV, but nowadays you can press a few buttons and buy your very own on Amazon. It’s wild. Perhaps the reason we can’t get enough of tiny homes is because everyone has the same single question on their minds about them: How do people store all their stuff?

Our Favorite New Le Creuset Color Is on Sale at Sur La Table
Sur La Table’s President’s Day sale is live, and while that means discounts on everything from blenders to sheet pans, one thing caught our eye: Le Creuset is up to 45 percent off, including items in one of their newest colors, Sea Salt. We wrote about the new color launch back in January, and Sea Salt just happened to be our favorite of the latest additions.

The Only Thing You Have to Remember for the Best-Ever Frittata
Frittatas are meant to be scrappy — filled with odds and ends from your produce and cheese drawers. They’re a great way to practice cooking with your gut and all five senses, using your eyes and ears and nose and touch and taste to determine when the veggies are cooked, the eggs are set, and so forth. So the next time you make one, I encourage you to ditch the recipe (or, use it solely as a point of inspiration), and just remember this one simple rule instead.

From Stovetop to Sheet Pan: 8 Essential Ways to Cook Steak
Steak may feel like a luxury only to be enjoyed at splurgy restaurants, but that’s hardly the case. Once you learn how to cook it yourself, you may never bother to make a reservation at a steakhouse again. Even the best, priciest cut of steak from a great butcher is cheaper than an average steak dinner out — and it’s much more satisfying to make it at home. Pair your steak with a quick sauce and maybe a glass of wine and be glad you stayed in.

4 Instant Pot Hacks That Actually Work (and One That Doesn’t)
The Instant Pot already saves us time and effort in the kitchen, but that surely hasn’t stopped us from hunting down the smart hacks you won’t find in the owner’s manual to really make this multi-cooker the MVP of kitchen appliances. And you really don’t have to look far for tips and tricks that claim to do just that. It’s figuring out which ones actually deliver that’s the hard part. To help with that, we put some to the test in our own kitchens.

6 Ways to Save Even More Money at Aldi
Aldi has famously low prices, and it consistently comes in lower than other grocery stores. You already know that the store has inexpensive (conventional and organic) produce, wine, snacks that rival Trader Joe’s, coffee, chocolate, and more. So, clearly, you’ll save money just by shopping there instead of other mainstream grocery stores. But what if we were to tell you that you could save even more money? You can! And here’s how.

This Remodeled RV Kitchen Is Cuter than Most Normal-Sized Kitchens
Forgoing conventional living arrangements in favor of life on the road in an RV requires a hefty dose of romanticism, and it takes a special sort of someone to really do it right. In this particular case, the special someone(s) are Elyse DeLisle and Amanda Goelz, a creative couple who just last year decided to scrap plans to close on a condo in Florida and instead travel the country in a renovated 1986 Fleetwood Avion that they found on Craigslist.

If You Love Plants, You Have to See This Kitchen
Here’s the best example of “never judge a book by its cover” if I’ve ever seen one. Before Erin Tole, Ryan Phillips, and their family moved into this ridiculously charming 5,000-square-foot Vancouver, Washington, home, it wasn’t exactly, well, as charming as you see it here. Nope.

Next Week’s Meal Plan: 5 Easy Instant Pot Dinners
March brings without warning a little bit of busyness back to our slow winter routine. There are Girl Scout cookies to sell, field clean-up days for t-ball, and the like amid our regular weeknight routines of dinner, homework, and baths. This week is particularly busy and includes a few nights where we have just an hour to eat together before dashing off or one or more grown-ups is out of the house for meetings.

Is This Pump for Your Peanut Butter Jar Actually Ingenious?
We are currently living in an era marked by increasingly ridiculous efforts to make even the most minute tasks super easy, like that gadget that can only slice your banana into smaller pieces. That’s why when I saw this pump that attached to the top of your peanut jar – I thought that it was totally unnecessary and laughed it off.

Kids Are Pranking Their Dads by Pretending to Fill Their Cars with Olive Oil
Remember when the young folks were trolling their mothers (or, in José Andrés’ case, their fathers) by texting them on Thanksgiving for instructions on how to microwave a turkey? It was good fun. Parents wondered where they had gone wrong, and if their child would soon die of stupidity and foodborne illness.

The Presidents’ Day Sales Your Kitchen Wants You to Know About
Presidents’ Day is one of those holidays that manages to pass by without much fanfare. It’s not a day that you’re necessarily going to have off from work or school, so it might even be a source of mild resentment. But there is something to be glad about, even if you are working: It’s our last major shopping holiday until Memorial Day, when retailers again drop their prices in honor of the long weekend.

eBay Is Having a Flash Sale on All Dyson Products (Yes, Including Vacuums)
We feel pretty strongly about vacuums here at Kitchn, and definitely aren’t immune to the allure of the Dyson. There’s something almost magical about them: They’re high-quality, design-forward, and very expensive. Hence, we always keep an eye out for ways to get these status-symbol products for less. While sites like Amazon and Bed Bath & Beyond have frequent sales and tout lower prices, there’s another one that you might not be thinking of: eBay.

A Vegan Bride Uninvited Her Omnivore Guests to Her Wedding
There is hardly a more stressful time in a person’s life than the months leading up to his or her wedding. Who among us has not experienced even the secondhand strain of trying to create an epic party that is both memorable, romantic, and embodies a couple’s strongly-held beliefs about life and love? In perhaps that regard one might sympathize with the vegan bride who recently went viral because she decided to uninvite all the guests who eat meat to her wedding.

That Old Tupperware in Your Cupboard Might Be Worth Money
If you watch Antiques Roadshow, you know the most unassuming things can be worth tons of money. Recently, the highest valuation ever for an antique brought in was a set of teacups from China, carried unceremoniously in Tupperware containers. While the man who owns them was in line, he said that the person who took his ticket looked at the containers and said, “Don’t think Tupperware is bringing much these days.

Why You Should Let Ice Cubes Melt on Your Area Rugs
Whether you’re rearranging or moving out, heavy furniture can leave behind quite the unattractive footprint on your carpet — and the longer the furniture has been there, the harder it is to persuade those carpet fibers to spring back into shape. So instead of laying on the floor with various carpet cleaning tools for hours on end, just try this super simple method.

This Classic Drink Is Still America’s Favorite Cocktail
Whether it comes frozen or on the rocks, or if you’re on the beach or celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the margarita has long been America’s go-to warm weather drink (or what you drink when you’re missing the warm weather). Tangy, sweet, a little salty — the margarita hits all the right notes. A new study confirms that Americans still call the margarita their favorite cocktail. Well almost all Americans. In Chicago, drinkers buck the trend.

Perfectly styled open shelving? Check. Pristine marble countertops? Double check. Alright, all those thumb-stopping kitchens you’ve bookmarked on Instagram might not be exactly attainable for mere mortals, except … are they? Maybe not the whole kit and caboodle (sorry), but look a little closer and I promise there are some valuable, usable lessons for real-life spaces once you look past the dollar signs floating across your eyeballs.

The 6 Little Things That Finally Got Me to Try (and Love) the Instant Pot
When I first heard buzz about the Instant Pot I figured it was not unlike the quesadilla maker; just another unnecessary kitchen gadget invented to get people excited about cooking that would eventually end up in the summer yard sale. It wasn’t for those of us who actually like to cook, those of us who get “ooohs” and “aaahs” as we place a meal on the table.

I Added a Power Drill to My Kitchen Cleaning Caddy and Haven’t Looked Back
I recently came across this set of cleaning attachments for a cordless power drill while researching scouring pads, and all I could think about was how it could be possible that I’d lived so long without something as life-changing as this in my cleaning kit. How? All those wasted hours of scrubbing when I could have been living my life to the fullest.

KitchenAid Has a New Limited-Edition Stand Mixer Color
If you remember, back in September we announced KitchenAid’s special Misty Blue stand mixer in honor of the brand’s 100th birthday. (For a refresher, see: We Got An Early Sneak Peek of KitchenAid’s Prettiest Mixer Yet.) The pale blue color was meant to feel vintage-y and pay homage to the past. Well, now the brand just announced a new limited-edition color that’s meant to look forward to the next 100 years. Any guesses to what it might be? It’s … Red!

This Is the Best Alternative to Drano — Especially for Old Kitchen Pipes
We live in Chicago in a charming old apartment that is very lovely and happy, with all its original features — including very, very old pipes. Upon moving in, our landlords expressly asked us to treat the old pipes with care, and to never ever pour Drano down the drain. At the time, it didn’t seem like a big deal. An easy promise to make, I thought.

Why One Dad Decided to Live on Expired Food for a Year
One of my favorite treats in the world is strawberry yogurt — the French kind with the little pieces of fruit in it. Because of its unique texture and ability to go bad in a snap, freshness is always on my mind when eating it. I often even have a person double check it (yes, really) to make sure it’s not expired even though the expiration date is days, sometimes even weeks from the day I’m eating it. I guess you could call me a expiration date skeptic.

Whole Foods Is Officially Shuttering Their Smaller-Format 365 Stores
In news that will surprise nobody who follows the grocery industry closely (which, let’s be honest, may be just me), Whole Foods announced that it is going to completely kill off its 365 brand of stores. You may remember that the smaller shops were designed to be a lower-priced Trader Joe’s competitor aimed at younger, more dollar-conscious shoppers. You might also remember that Whole Foods kicked off this year by announcing they would no longer open any new locations of the brand.

The Costco Find That’ll Make You Love Your Instant Pot Even More
I just celebrated my one-year anniversary — with my Instant Pot. I started slow, just making hard-boiled eggs (so easy to peel!), and now I no longer use the stovetop for spaghetti. Despite being late to the pressure-cooking party, the Instant Pot has become the workhorse of my kitchen. And recently, despite having a full day of work and activities already planned, a post on the Instant Pot Community Facebook page sent me straight to Costco. Can you guess what they sent me there for?

Um, This Instant Pot Competitor Has a Built-in Fridge
Instant Pots make a huge difference in the cooking life of many Americans, with the super-speedy pressure-cooking options and the one-pot abilities to brown and cook stews. Whole genres of cooking and food blogging have been devoted to the multi-cooker in the years since the kitchen appliance arrived on American shores. But now, reports Gear Patrol, a kitchen appliance company called Gourmia is offering a competitor that one-ups the famous pot, called the CoolCooker MultiCooker.

6 People on What They Really Notice About Your Messy Home
I hosted a small party for my daughter’s birthday the other weekend. After making sure the cake was baked and the decorations were hung on the wall, I felt pressed to deep clean. Not just pick up stuff, but dust baseboards and thoroughly mop the floors and shine the stainless appliances and wipe down every bathroom afresh. I didn’t want the parents dropping off their kids to think I was a slob. Fortunately or unfortunately, I didn’t have time. And guess what.

$500 Later, This Rental Kitchen Is Almost Unrecognizable
Before anyone gets too attached to this kitchen’s slightly retro style or admittedly charming checkered floor, it should be known that the charming floor was actually rotting — and there were a lot of other issues as well. Not an enormous surprise in a rental, but one renter was determined to give this kitchen a fresh start. Thankfully, she had a lenient landlord who was open to changes.
