The Biggest Mistake I Made in My Kitchen Renovation
About five years ago my husband and I bought an old, decrepit house, and renovated it top to bottom. (My whole renovation story is here, if you want to see!) Part of that renovation included adding on an open kitchen that we outfitted with a semi-custom IKEA kitchen. I loved designing my kitchen from scratch, and we saved a ton of money by doing most of the design and work ourselves.

5 Things New Homeowners Need to Know About Their Kitchens
Buying your first home is an exciting and arcane process — I know, because we just did it! Especially if you’re coming from an apartment or a rental, the ins and outs of taking care of your own space can be, well, all new. The room where this may be most evident? In the kitchen, where all those appliances, plumbing, and storage issues come together to create a zone that’s more prone to needing work than other, less-complicated rooms in the home.

Sometimes it feels like every time you try a vegan pastry, you have to flip a coin to see if you wind up with a mouthful of sand. Well, I have good new for you if you’re looking for a successful vegan pastry: The queen of cream and butter — Nigella Lawson — just shared her two favorite recipes for vegan cake.

This Chicken Piccata with Angel Hair and Asparagus Is a Weeknight Showstopper
Kitchn’s Delicious Links column highlights recipes we’re excited about from the bloggers we love. Follow along every weekday as we post our favorites. Lemons are my biggest heroes in the kitchen. In my youth there were many days when I’d get home late and there’d be no ingredients in the house, so I’d shrug it off as a “not the right time” for cooking, and just order dinner. (Sushi if it was close to payday; pizza if it wasn’t.

No One is Happy That The Bachelorette Sent This Grocery Store Owner Home
The last grocery man to capture America’s collective heart might’ve been Mr. Hooper, the bow-tie wearing owner of Sesame Street‘s corner store — and that was in, like, 1982. But that all changed during the season premiere of The Bachelorette when we were introduced to Joe Amabile.

Recipe: Instant Pot Kacchi Lamb Dum Biryani
Serving tender, aromatic lamb biryani for dinner (especially during Ramadan) just got easier, thanks to everyone’s favorite kitchen gadget: the Instant Pot. Because the popular electric pressure cooker releases steam at the end of the cook time, it mimics the traditional Indian “dum” style of cooking, in which a protein (in this case, lamb) is cooked slowly in steam.

Cook Like a Food Network Star in These Glorious Airbnb Kitchens
I watch cooking shows for the food and the hosts, but I have to admit that around 50 percent of my motivation for watching food TV is getting to ogle those fantasy kitchens. All those cabinets! The counter space! And the ranges all have more than four burners! Could you imagine what it would feel like to cook in a kitchen like that?

The One Thing My Rental Kitchen Yearns for Even More than a Dishwasher
When people talk about rental (or very basic) kitchens, there’s one thing they love to complain about the most: the absence of the oh-so-covetable dishwasher. And while I do think it’d be nice to have a machine that’ll clean my dirty plates for me (especially when I’m washing the 12th water glass and only two people live in my apartment), there’s one thing I’d actually rather have, if I were to find myself in an either-or scenario.

Before and After: A Granite-Heavy Kitchen Gets Made Over with Marble
What’s the best remedy for two competing patterns of speckled stone in a kitchen? Sometimes the answer is a third, completely different material. Can you believe this is the same kitchen? It’s so pretty! And those cabinets — is that middle upper cabinet an ingeniously disguised range hood? The marble walls are pure luxury, and that wonderful blue brings out such interesting hues in the stone. Also, that stove is classic and covetable. Sigh.

With the unofficial start to summer (and grilling season!) right around the corner, it’s time to talk burgers. There are obviously plenty of tips for cooking the best, juiciest burger, but a good burger starts at the grocery store. Specifically, when you’re in the meat department. 7 Organizing Tricks We Learned from These British Airbnbs
My favorite way to use Airbnb has nothing to with actually booking trips: I just like to peek into people’s perfectly styled homes and see how people live. ‘An Amazing Ride,’ Carla Hall Reacts to The Chew Getting Canceled After Seven Seasons
Sad news: ABC confirmed yesterday that after seven seasons, The Chew has been canceled. The Chew was groundbreaking when it debuted seven years ago as a food show that’s also a talk show, but it really worked, thanks in large part to the banter between hosts Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, and Michael Symon. They have an amazing rapport, and the set just looked like so much fun. It was impossible to watch The Chew without thinking, “I want to hang out too!

I Tried Trader Joe’s New Canned Wine and Here’s What I Thought
I don’t know why movie theaters that don’t sell alcohol still exist. Does anyone really expect us to watch Deadpool 2 without a beer? The first time I tried to go to a movie after moving to my new town, I figured they would not have a full bar behind the concession stand, so I asked for a white wine, or maybe a beer if they didn’t have that. The guy behind the counter looked at me like I was out of my mind and explained that they did not serve alcohol at all.

The USPS Is Releasing Scratch-N-Sniff Stamps that Smell Like Popsicles

The Delicioso series featured “bright and playful illustrations” — to use the USPS’ words — of ceviche, chile rellenos, empanadas, flan, sancocho, and tamales. They’re legit awesome.

The Real Reason Your Fridge Is Always a Mess
My fridge problem isn’t the physical act of cleaning it out; I do that every now and then without trouble. The real issue is keeping it organized and functional for more than a week or two at a time. The whole beautiful array of fresh veggies and lined-up condiments will slowly turn into a jumbled clutter that hides almost-expired products and allows containers of leftovers to grow their own ecosystems in the back.

Costco’s Cold Brew Mocha Freeze Is a Big, Caffeinated Slushie
My whole life I’ve heard tales of morning people — people who wake up feeling refreshed and leap out of bed ready to get things done. That is so not me. As far as I am concerned, we should have taps in our house that supply clean, running coffee, right next to the hot and cold water. The main thing I want when I get up in the morning is the ability to inject coffee directly into my brain.

This Woman Took Her Maternity Photos at H-E-B and It’s Hilarious
Most maternity photoshoots capture a particularly idyllic, relaxed-in-a-field-of-flowers version of pregnancy that doesn’t bear much resemblance to the real thing for most people. Someone out there might spend nine months wearing a flower crown in a field of lavender, but it wasn’t me. I felt like I spent 40 solid weeks in a grocery store trying to figure out what I was allowed to eat while pregnant, and then eating all of that.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Wedding Cake Is as Beautiful as You Thought It Would Be
Since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November, there has been much speculation about what kind of cake they would have for their wedding. Martha Stewart’s New Book Series Sounds Like the Harvard Classics of Life Skills
At the beginning of the 20th century, the then-president of Harvard asserted that a five-foot shelf of books could provide a good substitute for a liberal arts education to anyone who took the time to read them. Some publishers saw a money-making opportunity when they heard that and said, “Okay, which books?” The result was the famous Harvard Classics, or the “Five-Foot Shelf,” a 50-volume set of books designed to serve as a reading list or a sort of mobile university.
