The party problem: You want to take a bottle of white or rosé outside with you, but you don’t have a wine chiller and you’re worried the vino will get warm. The party trick: Look to your kitchen to save the day. See that crock that’s holding all your wooden spoons and silicone spatulas? Chances are, it’s the perfect size and shape to hold a bottle of wine and a bit of ice. It’s finally rosé season!

The First Thing You Should Always Do When Making Ice Cream
I remember the very first time I took my ice cream maker for a spin. I was giddy with excitement at the prospect of finally making my favorite dessert from scratch. I ever-so-carefully heated, whisked, and stirred the base. I chilled it, just the way the recipe called for, and then I hit a roadblock that completely derailed my ice cream dreams (at least for that day). There was one simple step that I completely overlooked: I forgot to put the ice cream bowl in the freezer ahead of time.

You’re One Ingredient Away from the Best Milkshake of Your Life
At its most basic, a really good milkshake can be whirled together with nothing more than some good ice cream and milk. That’s the simple version I sipped and savored for years. Is This the Smartest Way to Hang Kitchen Curtains?
The windows in your kitchen are probably the ones that get used (read: looked out of) the most. And the kitchen is certainly a room we spend a lot of time in. So what happens when you have a bunch of windows, but not necessarily the best view? You know, like if you have a front-row seat to see a brick wall? Or something even worse? You could steal this idea from designer Christine Alcalay, the brains behind the Brooklyn boutique KIWI.

Recipe: Beet “Ambrosia”
You know what I love? Being surprised by a familiar ingredient or an old recipe. This beet ambrosia does both. Ambrosia is typically a sweet fruit salad studded with marshmallows and chopped nuts, dressed with a sweet, creamy dressing. Beet ambrosia takes its visual cues from traditional ambrosia, but is decidedly savory. A bite of this beet ambrosia is like a bite of the classic beet and goat cheese salad, but easier to eat.

Recipe: One-Bowl Vanilla Cake with Yogurt Buttercream
This cake might look the most simple take on our one-bowl vanilla cake, but it has a delicious, ingenious tip that sets it apart from any other cake: The subtly sweet frosting is brightened with Greek yogurt. That’s right, part of the butter in the classic American-style buttercream is replaced with Greek yogurt for a naked cake that is more flavorful than a fully frosted cake any day. A naked cake is one way to add simple style to a layered cake.

The One Thing I Always Do When Sweetening My Smoothie with Dates
I know fruit smoothies can be plenty sweet on their own, but I like a little something more. My sweetener of choice is dates. They add the extra sweetness I crave along with subtle notes of rich caramel, and I feel good knowing I’m satisfying my sweet tooth with something wholesome. These dried fruits have also changed the way I make smoothies. When I toss dates into my smoothies, there’s always one thing I do first to guarantee the smoothest drink possible. Can you guess what it is?

15 Signs You’re Better at Cooking than You Think You Are

Your hair is shiny enough, you are good enough at your job, and you’re a better cook than you think you are. You didn’t go the Le Cordon Bleu? Make Salsa Verde Braised Chicken & Use It All Week Long
I love when a recipe can be stretched in so many different ways. You make one big batch, eat some for dinner that first night, and then use up the leftovers all week long. Pollo verde, or chicken braised in a spicy tomatillo sauce, is a perfect candidate for this. This dish has some serious flavor power going on. First you sear some bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs in a Dutch oven.

Should You Get a Fridge with the Freezer on the Top or Bottom?
If you’re considering a new refrigerator, chances are the first things you’ll consider are price and size. These are critical! But, as you’ll find out once you start to do some research, there are many (many) more factors to take into consideration. One of those is freezer placement. No, it’s not sexy, but it is a question you should ask yourself: Do you want a freezer on the top or a freezer on the bottom? There are advantages (and disadvantages) to both.

This Is the Best Way to Revive Stale Dates
If you’ve ever brought a package of dates home, on at least one occasion you’ve probably pulled them out to find them looking kind of crystallized on the outside and way more firm than you remember. Am I right? Here’s the thing about dates — these sweet fruits continue to dry out (and eventually harden up) as they age. It happens when they’re stored properly, and even faster when they’re not.

Why My Wedding Registry Was Private
I’ll be honest: I didn’t really want a wedding registry. The thought of my family and friends skimming a list of things to buy me, things I picked out, made me incredibly uncomfortable. But my mom was able to persuade me, arguing that people were going to give us gifts anyway and with no registry they’d have to spend time trying to figure out what we might want.

The Etiquette of the Open Bar
An open bar at a wedding is basically a premature gift to thank you for being a good guest. It allows you to get all the drinks you want, when you want, without having to search for an ATM. (The availability of booze adds just the right amount of social lubricant to get strangers to become friends and nudge even the shyest guests out on the dance floor, too.) Don’t make your hosts rethink their stance on serving (free!) alcohol by taking advantage of their generosity.

One time I posted an Instagram shot of the cases and cases of LaCroix stacked in the window of my local Key Food and the official LaCroix account actually liked my photo! You Only Need One Ingredient to Make the Creamiest Scrambled Eggs
Last year when I was developing a recipe for breakfast sandwiches, I had one major goal in mind: to create a recipe with the creamiest eggs imaginable. After trying a few different mix-ins, I struck gold, in the most delicious way possible. It forever changed the way I make everything from scrambled eggs to egg casseroles.
