Recipe: Rainbow Veggie Noodle Salad
Yes, the spiralizer is a bit of a novelty, but it helps make things a bit more playful. I’ve found that my ambivalence towards cucumbers turn them into noodles, spiralized zucchini dish Give this salad a rest in the dressing before serving so the veggies have some time to soften and absorb the flavors.

This Man Is Saying NO to Pumpkin Spice Lattes in August
Today is the last day of August, and Labor Day weekend is this coming weekend, but fall doesn’t technically start until September 22. Put away your cardigans and fuzzy boots, because there’s still time to eat tomatoes and hit the beach. Sean Bauer has feelings on this subject. For the last two years he has “protested” the fact that pumpkin spice drinks are released earlier and earlier every year.

A Book, a Snack, and a Hammock (but No Phone)
Summertime, in theory, means more time in general. More time for fun and leisure and enjoying ourselves away from the workplace or even our own homes. Sometimes all that extra time is a myth and we can’t venture too far. Sometimes we have only an hour or so to spare. If this is the case for you, then let me recommend the Book, Snack and Hammock Escape.

Beyond the Corn Maze: 6 Reasons to Visit a Farm Stand
Farm stands were once just quaint roadside attractions where we left our money in an honor box and helped ourselves to plump tomatoes and sweet summer corn. These days, many farm stands act as roadside attractions, offering up everything from entertainment to wine. Here are six reasons to brake for the next farm stand on your summer road trip. Some farm stands offer the luxury of either picking your own produce or having pints, bushels, and pecks pre-picked and ready for purchase.

A Strong Case for Putting Nectarines on Your Pizza
The concept of putting salad on pizza infuriates some pizza purists, but I think it’s ingenious. Instead of having a salad on the side, you eschew the traditional red sauce and mozzarella and throw your entire salad right on top of your pizza crust. It’s the best of both worlds. This particular salad features caramelized onions, goat cheese, prosciutto, mixed greens, slivered almonds, balsamic vinegar, and sliced nectarines.

Recipe: Caprese Chicken
This is the part of summer we’ve all been waiting for — when the best tomatoes of the season take over the tables at the market. Of course you’ll want to get your fill or them eaten as is. Along with creamy mozzarella and fresh basil, these tomatoes are the simplest way to perk up that weeknight chicken breast. There are more than a few ways to cook chicken breast, but this method is hands-down my favorite. It starts with well-seasoned pieces of chicken and a wickedly hot pan.

My Front Porch Has Changed, but Its Importance Hasn’t
Growing up, I couldn’t imagine the sun beating down more intensely anywhere else in the world than it did during those summers on Long Island. After an hour playing baseball in the street and shouting “CAR!” every 10 minutes, I would retreat to a folding chair on my front porch. The porch wasn’t grand.

Don’t Be Selfish: Preserve Something Now for Your Winter Self
It’s kind of unfair, how over-the-top the summer bounty is in August and how utterly bleak things can get in January. Yes, you can purchase tomatoes and raspberries in winter, but we all know nobody’s being fooled by those silly styrofoam props that look like the real deal but neither smell nor taste like anything. And don’t get me started on the texture. So how do we stretch the abundant sunshine of August to the darkest corners of January? The answer is simple: We can it up!

Recipe: Watermelon Caramel Sauce
As we’re learning this summer, there are few things the mighty watermelon can’t do. To that list you can now add a caramel-like dessert sauce made from watermelon juice. It might sound like a stretch, but it works — and here’s why. Making traditional caramel sauce requires two ingredients: sugar and water. While the sugar here is natural, these are basically the main ingredients in watermelon.

5-Minute Freezer Side Dish: Corn with Turmeric & Black Pepper
You’re probably already familiar with topping frozen corn with the trio of soft butter, salt, and black pepper, but this version reaches into the spice cabinet to take it one step further. Go beyond the familiar bowl of corn by tossing in cracked black pepper for small crunchy bursts of heat and get a subtle, earthy bitterness from ground turmeric. It’s a small change from the side dish you’re used to and an easy way to keep dinner interesting.

How My Front Porch Eased My Loneliness in the Big City
Growing up, I didn’t have a front porch. I mean, we had a small slab of concrete in the front of my house that had a bench on it, but we never sat on it, and foliage obscured the street view. Not that there was much to look at: I lived on a cul-de-sac in a Florida suburb, not particularly close to any neighbors. As a result, a front porch was never something I particularly valued when it came to features of a home. But moving to a city changed all that.

The Only Reason to Turn on the Oven in the Summer
Truth is, summer is not always the best time to make a pie. To begin with, making pie crust is all about maintaining the chill, which is nearly impossible to do in a hot summer kitchen. And pies often need 45 to 60 minutes in the oven to bake. Who wants their oven going for an hour in the middle of August? Can’t we just eat Popsicles and watermelon for dessert and call it done? Well, no we can’t. Why not? Peaches is why not!

A Neat Freak Shares Her Top Tips for Organizing the Fridge
I have a bit of a problem that I’ve long since known about: I am very enthusiastic about fridge organization. When I visit my dad, I spend more time pulling out items and rearranging things in his fridge than what may be deemed normal. When I lived with a whole slew of interns on a farm in Italy for the summer, I’d slip away after lunch to get things in our communal fridge in order. Call me anxious, call me crazy — but a messy fridge is just something I can’t do.

Recipe: Caprese Grilled Cheese
I wait all year to eat my weight in caprese salads during the summer. While I could easily make them through the year, they’re barely average with sub-par, out-of-season tomatoes. So it’s worth it to hold out until tomatoes peak and creamy, fresh mozzarella begs to join in on the fun. But eating caprese in its classic form is just one way to enjoy it — this twist on a grilled cheese just might rival the original.

3 Reasons Why You Should Actually Buy That Mini Watermelon
Years ago your only choice for watermelon was the big 20-pounder or perhaps wedges of that behemoth cut and wrapped nicely by your grocery store staff. Here are three reasons why I believe mini watermelons are the ones to buy.

A Guide to Drinking with Spicy Foods: Beer
Of all the alcoholic beverage options out there, beer is probably the best at quelling the heat and quenching chile-induced thirst. For starters, beer tends to be fairly low alcohol — five to seven percent ABV compared to 10 to 15 percent for wine and 40 percent for spirits. Carbonation also helps remove the fiery heat of capsaicin from the palate. But not all beers are created equal — just like not all spicy foods are created equal.

5 Life Experiences That Are Better on the Front Porch
My front porch is nothing fancy. Freezing Is the Easiest, Fastest Way to Preserve Summer Fruits and Vegetables
It’s usually right around this point in the summer, each and every year, that I get the warmest, fuzziest feeling at the farmers market — the abundance of seasonal fruits and vegetables has a way of doing that.
