How I Decluttered My Kitchen Junk Drawer
I don’t believe in junk drawers. It’s not that I don’t believe they exist — they’re a fixture in something like 99 percent of American homes — I just don’t believe they’re necessary. Every drawer should have a reason for being. A junk drawer is just waiting to find its true calling. So, it’s a little embarrassing to admit that I have a junk drawer in my kitchen.

A Guide to Chilling Your Red Wine
There’s no rule that says you can’t drink your red wine chilled to its tannic bones at refrigerator temperature (around 40°F), or that room-temperature red isn’t perfectly fine — even if it is summer and you don’t have AC. That said, there is an ideal temperature to drink your red, and for most that’s cellar temperature, or around 55°F to 60°F. At that temperature, your red will open up to show you its very best self.

You Have Our Permission to Chill Your Red Wine
We love rosé as much as everyone else and yes, it’s probably safe to say that pink is the color of summer wine, but there’s no need to banish red from the summer rotation. Just throw those cold-weather sippers in the fridge and prepare to see a softer side. Yes, you read that right! Despite what often passes for conventional wisdom, enjoying red wine cold is far from blasphemy. In fact, you’re probably drinking your reds too hot.

These Cucumber-Mint Popsicles Are Like a Spa for Your Tastebuds
I’ve only been to a spa once in my life, but — besides the relaxing massage, of course — my favorite part was the cold cucumber-mint water set out for guests to enjoy. With fresh mint, cucumber, and green tea, these Popsicles are reminiscent of that refreshing spa water — and they’ll be stocked in my freezer all summer long. First you’ll need to make a mint-infused simple syrup, with water, sugar, and sprigs of fresh mint.

Carrying Home in a Sheet Cake
Namoora holds a special place in my heart. This sweet semolina sheet cake speckled with almonds takes me back to my grandmother’s home in Dearborn, Michigan. Each crunchy bite of cake transports me to my childhood, when I did not understand the importance this decadent treat would have on my life. Like the preparation and planning for any major holiday, Eid Al-Fitr preparations begin a few days before the actual festivities and celebrations.

Why You Should Just Relax About Your Cluttered Countertops
This is one of my kitchen countertops. You’ll notice that it is not clutter-free. Or actually, it is clutter-free, if you define clutter as piles of untidy and useless items. If that’s the case, then this counter is totally free from clutter because everything you see here is used either daily or weekly or makes me inordinately happy to look at. In other words, none of this is clutter — at least to me.

Why I Go Barefoot in the Kitchen
This past spring, at The Kitchn team retreat, I sat around a table with my fellow editors and admitted something rather controversial: I don’t wear shoes in the kitchen. This admission sparked harrowing tales of severed toes and other knife-related atrocities, but I dug in my (barefoot) heels and stood by this cooking faux pas. Here’s why. Why I go barefoot in the kitchen is inextricably linked to why I cook in the first place.

Recipe: Rhubarb and Tomato Dumplings
Even without the rhubarb, tomato dumplings are a mystery to those who didn’t grow up eating them. They are an old-fashioned favorite of some grandmas and meat-and-three diners. Juicy canned tomatoes, either home-canned or store-bought, simmer in a fragrant stew that is topped with dollops of biscuit dough that poach in the delicious liquid. Think of them as chicken and dumplings, made with tomatoes instead of chicken.

A Weekend Ribs Feast…On a Weeknight
When my son was a baby, we used to get together for weeknight dinners with neighbors. 6 Ways to Make Celery More Exciting
You know what? Celery is an excellent vegetable. It’s crunchy, piquant, and even good for you. But beyond the snack tray and past its use as a kitchen workhorse exists a world where celery no longer has to play second fiddle.

You’ll Never Guess the Key Ingredient in This Chicken Brine
It’s no secret that a brine is the answer to incredibly moist and flavorful meat. The salty solution helps the meat absorb more moisture, which is especially valuable when it comes to poultry like chicken, which often dries out when cooked. But there’s an ingenious brine that you might not have thought to use before — and you’ll have to head to the cheese counter to find it. A feta brine is the best brine you’re never heard of before. Cheese? Yes.

Europeans Are So Much Better at Wine Coolers (and Here’s Why)
Europeans always seem to know exactly how to drink without much fuss. They’re not afraid to tamper with your wine, whether that means adding a drop of cassis to their sparkling wine, or cutting grocery-store vino with Coca-Cola or juice. I often wonder: Is it something in their DNA? Is there an unspoken lifestyle code that makes drinking wine — and mixing it with all sorts of ingredients — so much easier on the other side of the Atlantic?
