I have never been very fond of my refrigerator, a white monstrosity that is really too big for my small rental kitchen and sits at an angle due to a slope in the floor. But something happened this week that changed everything.

The Monstrosity, pre-makeover

I came home the other day to discover that my partner Gregory had hung a large photo of oyster mushrooms on the side of the refrigerator. It was meant to be temporary — the fridge was just a handy surface on which to flatten the print before hanging it elsewhere. Yet the image so utterly transformed the kitchen that I convinced him to leave it up.

One might think that a huge print would make the refrigerator look even more imposing, but to me it had the opposite effect. The blacks and grays balanced out the big white box and complemented the adjacent stove. Suddenly that part of the kitchen felt cozy rather than blah. Just like that, the monstrosity was minimized.

Sometimes the simplest things can make a world of difference! What’s the best simple change you’ve made in your kitchen?
