A Plain Egg Has Finally Beaten Kylie Jenner’s Instagram Record
Which came first: the chicken or the Instagram influencer?
2019 is already off to a great start. First we were blessed with a 27-pound bucket of mac and cheese from Costco, and now this Instagram egg. On January 4, 2019, Instagram account @world_record_egg (aka “EGG GANG”) posted a picture of a plain, rather boring stock image of a brown egg. The goal of the photo was to beat Kylie Jenner’s record of most-liked Instagram picture, a photo of her and her 5-day-old daughter, Stormi, posted on February 6, 2018.
“Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram,” the Instagram account EGG GANG said on Instagram. “Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this ?”
And got it, they did. As of this writing, that single picture of the most industrious egg on the web has garnered over 32,535,567 likes on Instagram, gaining more than a million additional likes an hour during the early Monday hours.
The pre-scrambled egg has also already been verified by Instagram, has spawned hundreds of copycat accounts, and boasts 3.8 million followers, even though it’s only posted one photo of itself. (However, Jenner still has you there, egg; she currently has 123 million followers.)
People seem to be relishing in the defeat, which seems to come from a place of dethroning famous figures who seem to have everything going for them. But if you think an Instagram feud between a Kardashian and a grocery item that can use the internet is brewing, Jenner seems to be taking the defeat all in good fun, posting this short video of her destruction of one of the eggs brethren, saying, “Take that little egg.”
That, and the fact that EGG GANG seems to be taking the laborious spirit of the Jenner/Kardashian clan to heart by announcing that they’re producing merchandise for their followers, seems to indicate this is a friendly competition — not a chicken fight.
