I Didn’t Expect These Glass Storage Containers to Be So Versatile — And Yet, Here We Are
Wasting food has long been my hardest-to-break bad kitchen habit. Despite every good intention to use up leftovers, second halves of veggies, and last chunks of cheese, those things are going to waste more often than not, lost and forgotten in the depths of a chaotic fridge.
As prices rise exponentially on groceries across the country, it’s become more important to me than ever to curb unnecessary waste and use up every bit of food that comes through my kitchen — and a surprising purchase has helped me finally do it.
In an attempt to replace my mismatched and stained plastic food storage with something more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing, and to kickstart a new better-for-everyone habit, I picked up this five-piece Urban Green Glass Containers with Bamboo Lids set from Amazon, and it’s revitalized my kitchen in more ways than I expected. If you have a similar resolution to cut down on food waste, save money, and appreciate your kitchen gear more this year, this could be the solution for you, too.
I was drawn to the set because I love the earth-friendly, endlessly reusable nature of glass and bamboo, and because I hoped they’d look a lot more stylish and clean in the fridge. I was totally right on both fronts. Being able to stack well-packed leftovers neatly in the fridge also helps keep it more organized, and the clear glass ensures I can see what’s in each container and use it on time.
All five pieces in the set are a different size to fit everything from the other half of an onion to leftovers from a holiday feast. There always seems to be a size that’s perfect for anything I need to tuck away in the fridge.
Aside from dinner leftovers, I’ve started storing fresh produce like berries and raw veggies in these containers, so that they’re always visible. And as a result, I remember that they’re there and snack on them more often.
The bamboo lids press on easily and securely to create an airtight seal while still being easy to open and close any time. And the containers are majorly versatile, considering they’re oven-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe. You won’t add any extra cleaning hassle to your routine by swapping these in, either — just a quick rinse with soap and water, or drop it into the dishwasher. I’ve had no problem with putting the lids through the dishwasher, but I wouldn’t put them in the oven or microwave.
I also keep finding more uses for these every day outside of food storage. I’ve now started using the bamboo lid as a mini cutting board for whatever’s inside, thus saving myself from bringing out — and washing — an extra dish, bowl, or plate. The lids are thick and sturdy, and I haven’t seen any cracks.
Sometimes it’s the easiest upgrades that actually end up doing the most. A simple, sustainable swap for my kitchen helped make my fridge more organized and stylish, helped me cut food waste, and even helped make doing dishes easier.
As the new year rolls around, money-saving and kitchen-organization goals are at the forefront of my mind — and you bet I’ll be reaching for these glass containers for months to come.
