Growing up in New Jersey may make me biased, but in my opinion, bagels make the perfect brunch spread. The how-to is simple: Grab a variety of flavors (sesame seed, everything, plain, and pumpernickel are my favorites), secure a few spreads (think: cream cheese, butter, lox), and just like that, you’re all set with everything you need to feed a crowd. Portable, customizable, and delicious — the bagel spread can’t be beat. Except for just one thing… they sure are annoying to slice.

How many times have you sliced into a bagel only to end up with totally uneven halves and crumbs everywhere? Or worse, cut a finger on a huge serrated breadknife? A few times too many, probably. But don’t worry, we have you covered. Enter: The Original Bagel Slicer. This easy-to-use gadget dishes out perfectly sliced bagels with one quick movement, every time.

It’s obvious why this tool is a total must-have for any bagel lover, and there are over 12,000 5-star Amazon reviews to back me up. As one customer notes, “This thing slices so cleanly that there are no crumbs to speak of.” “I should have ordered this years ago. It slices evenly and quickly every time,” says another. Basically, this thing has a full-blown fan club, and rightfully so—it yields the perfectly sliced bagel quickly, safely, and mess-free.

To be honest, this bagel slicer is one of those old-school kitchen gadgets that I used all the time growing up but has totally slipped under the radar into my adulthood. It reminds me of bagel day at summer camp — I can only imagine the sliced fingers and crying eyes the counselors would have had to deal with if it weren’t for this easy-to-use tool. So here’s my humble plea: Let’s bring back the bagel slicer. I’m not sure why it fell out of favor to begin with, but I’m pretty sure it was a huge mistake on our part. It’s time to welcome it back into our kitchens and morning routines. So excuse me while I click add to cart and plan my next Sunday get-together… Bagels on me!

P.S. If you observe Yom Kippur, this tool is an absolute must. I’m buying one for my mom, the Jewish holiday host of the family.
