All-purpose spice blends are a busy cook’s secret weapon. Often made with a combination of salt, pepper, dried garlic, dried onion, dried herbs, and savory spices, these blends can be used to season everything from burgers and chicken breasts to potatoes to shrimp.
Now, I’m not asking you to give up your favorite bottled blend (I’m looking at you, Montreal), but I am asking you to consider making a homemade batch too. Not only can you customize it to your liking, but, for anyone in need of a last-minute Father’s Day gift, it also makes a great homemade present (that they’ll use practically every day).
Why You Should Make Your Own House Seasoning Blend
The allure of a spice mix is that once the individual spices are combined, it’s a one-stop shop for seasoning. Plus, it takes just five minutes to assemble, and is made up of spices you likely already have in your spice cabinet.
Consider the recipe below a guideline — a starting point for your own house blend. As written, the spice mixture is peppery, but not spicy, thanks to freshly ground black pepper and red pepper flakes. The addition of savory spices like paprika, dried dill, garlic, and onion add an incredible depth of flavor to burgers, chicken, potatoes, and more.
