Alice Waters Is Teaching a MasterClass That You DO NOT Want to Miss
What are you doing to keep yourself busy while stuck inside these days? Personally, I find myself constantly craving an endless stream of Cake Boss, but ask me two hours later, and I probably won’t even remember what happened to Buddy and his entourage. While we all want to turn off our brain and watch something light and easy, this long stretch of self-isolation is also a great opportunity to pick up a new skill or two, especially in the kitchen! And right now, iconic restaurateur, chef, author, and James Beard Foundation Award winner Alice Waters is teaching a 17-class course through MasterClass that will introduce you to the chef’s legendary farm-to-table cooking techniques.
For the unacquainted, MasterClass is an online school where celebrities and professionals teach you what they do best. While we’ve tested Gordon Ramsay’s 15-class cooking course for ourselves (spoiler: It was awesome!), you can also take lessons from famous chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Dominique Ansel, learn writing skills from author Margaret Atwood, and get tips on interior design from Kelly Wearstler, to name a few.
Waters’ course features 12-minute long classes taught from her cozy California kitchen (all those soothing shades of green!) and formatted for a variety of potential students. Whether you’re looking to learn more about cooking with seasonal produce or want to elevate your vegetable-forward meals to gourmet status, Waters will take you through it all.
You’ll start with an introduction to her philosophy on food, and slowly build from there, learning how to shop and cook with ingredients bought from your local farmers market or picked from your own home garden. Waters will also show you how to use every part of a fruit, herb, or vegetable, stock your pantry with healthful staples, and pick the right cooking tools. The course ends with a bonus class where you’ll put your newly acquired skills to the test and cook a freshly cracked egg on a spoon(!) directly over a crackling fire and served on grilled toast. “I want you to know what food is really alive and seasonal,” Waters says in her announcement video. “This is the kind of cooking that nourishes the body and soul.”
Along with Waters’ course, you also get access to the entire MasterClass library for $15 per month, and the best part is you’re not tied down by a strict schedule or timetable. You can watch the videos whenever you want and on whichever device you prefer. You also get a downloadable cookbook with helpful resources like lesson recaps, recipes, and supplemental materials. While the classes are a fun way to build on your skill set, they also make sweet and thoughtful gifts for family or friends who are looking for a creative outlet as well.
