We Tried Aldi’s New Keto Ice Cream — Here’s What We Thought of It
Fun fact: Aldi is quietly a great place to shop for keto-friendly groceries. Remember their zero-net-carb bread that was so popular, it was being sold on eBay? Or these spaghetti noodles made out of edamame? Well, now we have keto-friendly ice cream!
Starting on February 19, Aldi stores will have three different flavors of keto-friendly ice cream for just $3.99 per pint. (They’re part of the Aldi Finds program, which means they’ll only be available for a limited time unless execs decide to extend the offering.) There will be Cookie Dough, Peanut Butter & Fudge, and Mint Chip — and they each have just five net carbs per serving. But how do they taste? Let’s a take look. (That’s right, we got our hands on some pints before they hit shelves!)
Peanut Butter & Fudge
Here we have a peanut butter ice cream base with a no-sugar-added fudge swirl. The peanut butter definitely shines and the fudge is rich and generously swirled throughout. The ice cream is creamy and doesn’t have any weird textural or after-taste issues that a lot of other “diet” ice cream can have. (Actually none of these ice creams suffered from either of those issues!) This was the most indulgent of the bunch and our clear favorite.
Mint Chocolate Chip
Our second favorite: mint ice cream with no-sugar-added chocolaty chips. At first glance, the chocolate chips looked more like teeny tiny chocolate flakes and we were disappointed, but as we dug in, we found bigger pieces. Turns out, we actually enjoyed (and approved of!) the ratio of ice cream to chips!
Cookie Dough
Although this one was still good, it was our least favorite of the bunch. And that’s only because the cookie dough wasn’t the same as the perfectly gritty stuff we’re used to in non-keto cookie dough ice cream. (You know what we mean!) The vanilla ice cream base, however, is everything you’d want it to be.
