Valentine’s Day came early in my house — because Aldi sent me a box of heart-shaped treats, pink things (Millie, my pup, especially loved the pink dog toys!), and chocolates. I felt so loved! And also … so intrigued by the $7 bottle of chocolate wine.

For starters, because it’s called “Petit Chocolat Wine Specialty,” which is not the best name. (There’s also a bottle of Chocolate Cellar Chocolate Red Wine that I didn’t get.) And because it looks more like chocolate milk than wine.

I tried it and here’s what I thought of it!

Touted as “the perfect synergy of red wine with dark chocolate flavor and finest cream,” the bottle says the stuff is best served cold, so I popped it in the freezer for a little bit until I couldn’t just wait any longer. I poured myself a glass and stuck my nose in.

It smelled exactly how I wanted it to smell. It smelled like a sweet, chocolatey boozy drink — almost like a mudslide or one of those super-decadent drinks you can get at TGI Fridays. Then, I took a sip. At 11:20 this morning (because I’m dedicated to my job!).

This stuff is legit good. I want to say it tastes like a chocolatey Baileys Irish Cream, but I have to honestly admit that I can’t remember the last time I’ve had Baileys. So let’s just say it tastes like a chocolatey version of what you think Baileys tastes like. It’s rich, smooth, and indulgent. The bottle suggests drinking it on its own (the alcohol content is 14 percent, so I put my glass down after one or two sips), or with chocolate desserts, or on top of ice cream, which gets my vote for the best option.

While Petit Chocolat Wine Specialty wouldn’t be my go-to for a post-work drink, I definitely do get the novelty of it for Valentine’s Day. Again, I like it over ice cream or with dessert. And at just $6.99 per bottle, it’s a nice little treat for February 14. Look for it in stores now (it’s actually available year round) and these other groceries starting January 30.
