After Dinner Treat: Espresso Chocolates From Italy
Do you like espresso? And dark chocolate? Together? These are the questions a friend asked before placing a retro-looking wrapped candy in my palm. I unwrapped it, ready to take a bite, when she just about knocked the piece of chocolate out of my hand. You can’t just bite into half of Pocket Coffee, for one crucial reason.
Pocket Coffee, made by Italian chocolatier Ferrero (yes, of Ferrero Rocher), is unlike any other coffee-flavored chocolate I’ve tried. The center of the dark chocolate rectangle is filled with really sweet, and really liquid, espresso. Any biting to be done must be taken care of while the whole thing is in your mouth. Very sweet espresso gushes out of the center of the candy, and complements the crisp dark chocolate like a dream. Delicious! Beyond that little tip, Pocket Coffee is the perfect after dinner treat, especially to have around the house to give to guests.
I find Pocket Coffee in packages of five chocolates in an Italian shop in NYC’s Chelsea Market. Since they only sometimes have it, and I’ve never seen it anywhere else outside of Italy, your best bet for finding it is online.
