The “New Neutral” Kitchen Cabinet Color Designers Can’t Get Enough Of in 2024 (It Isn’t White!)

Cheyenne Ely, owner and principal designer at Cheyenne Paige Interiors in The Woodlands, Texas, calls it a chameleon. “The neutral undertones allow it to pair well with a range of finishes, from brass to black to polished nickel,” she explains. “It complements various countertop materials as well — think soapstone, marble, or a white quartz with subtle gray veining.” These points, along with its ability to pull warm or cool depending on the light, make it a safe choice if you don’t fancy yourself an interiors expert.

This coziness is a welcome departure from “millennial gray,” which Ely insists is off-limits (at least in her work). “The issue isn’t with gray itself — gray is a versatile neutral that most definitely has a place in our homes,” she explains. “Instead, ‘millennial gray’ interiors find themselves blacklisted for the overuse of the cool-toned color in selections ranging from paint colors to flooring and everything in between.” This over-reliance on a color with roots in the 2010s can feel sterile and, depending on the cabinets and shade, so can white.

Above all else, however, Ely feels strongly that homes shouldn’t chase trends for the sake of trends. “While it’s great to have your finger on the pulse of what’s new and popular, the best cabinet color is ultimately the one you love,” she says. “That’s what makes a certain shade ‘better’ than the rest — it’s all about creating a space that resonates with you.” If Accessible Beige is providing just the spark of inspiration you’ve been craving, then your kitchen will always be in style.
