A Spacious Kitchen Made for Socializing

Kate and her fiancé Joseph live in a beautiful (and completely gut renovated) 1904 shingle and stone farmhouse in Rhode Island. While planning the redesign and during the renovation itself the couple worked to be “mindful of the integrity and spirit of the house” while also bringing in beautiful wood workings, art, furniture, and top of the line appliances. The spacious kitchen is perhaps the highlight of the home.

With a kitchen this open and airy, how you could not use it for socializing? And they do, according to this description from the Apartment Therapy House Tour:

Big tables sit at the center of the kitchen and dining rooms awaiting gregarious parties of friends and family for holiday celebrations or casual farmers market feasts. On less festive, but equally jovial occasions, dining tables become conference tables and wine glasses make way for laptops. A little alcove off the kitchen houses a well-appointed stock of liquor, vintage ice buckets, and martini shakers. Guests can mix a drink then retreat to the hearthside in winter, or the porch overlooking the wilds of a nature preserve in summer.

A few resource notes: The leather handles on the kitchen cabinet doors (the couple’s “biggest indulgence”) were purchased in London, and the lighting fixture above the dining room table is from Wyeth in New York. The appliances are Aga and Sub Zero, and the stove is made by DCS—Kate’s absolute favorite. As she says: “I used to have a Viking and the DCS has better control and is so much easier to clean.”
