We’ve been taking peeks into a family kitchen in Manhattan — one of those dreamy spaces that happen when a homeowner is at last able to build the space they’ve dreamed of for years.
In Rebecca and Craig’s kitchen, one of the elements I loved the most was the custom baking station — a movable cart designed for many hands and full-on family baking. Here’s Rebecca’s story of how it came about.
“Part of the inspiration for the baking station,” Rebecca explained, “and to some degree the design of the kitchen in general, was about creating space for multiple cooks.” Craig is a confident cook and very at ease in the kitchen, which at first was intimidating to her, and she found herself carving out baking as her own space. “I found myself segueing into baking (where I’d been comfortable since childhood).”
So her baking craft became another element of the new kitchen. “I wanted to create a place I could really dedicate to that, and do it separately from the rest of the action in the kitchen.”
The baking station has a few elements:
- KitchenAid Mixer Lift – Rebecca installed a lift for the mixer — which lets it be put away when not in use, but easily lifted up to countertop-level. I’ve always loved these lifts and they’re easy to find and install (check out Rev-a-Shelf).
- Movable Cart – There’s a cart with a stone for rolling out dough and storage for tools and ingredients.
And, perhaps most impressively, much of this station is mobile. The cart, obviously, is on wheels, so Rebecca can move it over to the mixer. “I’d like to say this keeps me out of Craig’s hair when he’s cooking under pressure, but it’s kind of in my nature to spread out.”
All super smart, and not hard to build. Any kitchen cart could be fitted in this way as a mobile station for any type of cooking you love the most.
Thank you so much for letting us peek into your kitchen, Rebecca and Craig!
