She was the founding Design and Lifestyle Editor for Kitchn and the Managing Editor for Apartment Therapy’s green living site, Re-Nest (RIP). After a few years offline and then working elsewhere, she’s back to share ideas about design, kids, and family life. It’s helpful that she now has two little kids and lots of thoughts about all those things. She lives with said kids and their father in St. Paul, MN.

If you’ve ever wondered how a food stylist and food photographer would set up their home kitchen, here’s your chance to get a firsthand peek: Johanna is a food stylist, and her partner Derek is a food photographer. Together they live and work in a Chicago loft with a large, open kitchen and dining space that fits with the couple’s eclectic, creative style.

Mismatched chairs and vintage wooden crates, dishes, and tins create a “time-loved aesthetic” that’s both warm and totally suitable for the couple’s work. The kitchen island is an antique French school laboratory table, while most of the dishes and cookware are thrifted from antique malls, thrift store, estate sales and England, where Johanna is from.
