The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, which means there is an excuse for lots of frilly hats, fancy sandwiches, and mint juleps. The classic mint julep is easy, refreshing, and a staple for a reason, but sometimes you want (er, need) to switch things up.

Let’s talk about the classic mint julep: the cocktail includes three simple ingredients –– bourbon, mint, and sugar. It’s served with crushed ice in a pewter juelp cup (although an old fashioned glass is also acceptable). These five variations have these three ingredients in some form or another, but they take things to the next level by adding interesting fruits, or infusing the bourbon beforehand.
