I love my local Target. I love the wide aisles, the Starbucks right next to the front door, and the fact that I can buy workout clothes, a car seat, a mid-century modern-style bar cart, and 40 skin-brightening facial sheet masks with snail essence in the same building as my favorite snack foods and dish soap.
Target has a huge (although often overlooked) grocery department, and they're also known for having pretty great prices. To get an insider's perspective, we asked some Target employees of Reddit what their favorite budget grocery buys are. Here's what they recommended.
The most popular suggestion came from a Target employee going by Geedanny, who suggested Target's Market Pantry frozen chicken wings in either honey barbecue or Buffalo-style sauce. Three more fans showed up to sing the praises of these pre-cooked frozen wings as well. Prices vary by location, but my local Target has 1.75-pound bags for just $3, and they frequently pop up as part of a two-for-$5 deal.
Tip: It's also a good idea to download the Target Cartwheel app and check for discounts that way, because Market Pantry items are often on sale.
A Target employee going by TheOfficialWasteland suggested buying sodas, and keeping an eye out for the deals where 12-packs of Coke or Pepsi brand sodas sell for three for $10 or four for $12. That's an excellent way to save money and stock up on favorites. Another employee said you should always check the Cartwheel app, because sometimes there's an extra 25-percent-off coupon during those deals.
3. Simply Balanced Items
Target employees know about deals the rest of us might not hear about — they also have access to some really sweet employee perks. One of the best: They get 20-percent off fresh or frozen produce and Simply Balanced items, and they still get the extra 5-percent off for using the Target Red Card.
"All things produce and Simply Balanced for that extra 20% off!" said an employee going by Kernalish, with a heart-eyes emoji. One former Target employee who has moved on to a job in finance mentioned wanting to try to pick up a single weekend shift, just to get that 20-percent grocery discount.
Even if you don't get that sweet, sweet employee discount, the prices are still decently cheap and the quality can't be beat.
"Target has the best deal on Jennie O extra lean ground turkey," says Patrick720. "That stuff is $7 at Walmart and $3.49 at my Target. It's amazing. The whole pound is 6g of fat." Again prices vary by store.
"I love the Market Pantry Onion Rings," said a user going by zereldalee. "The sauce that comes with it is awesome and if the Target Gods are listening, they will bottle that stuff. I want to dip everything in it."
Multiple people agreed on the irresistible qualities of Target's frozen onion rings and the Southwest-style dipping sauce that comes with them.
In fact, many Target employees recommended the store's private-label brands as being both the best deals in the store and actually very tasty. The Market Pantry macaroni and cheese and Target-brand salsa both came highly recommended. A store's private-label brands are often the best deal in the building, and with the Cartwheel card, they're often available for an even bigger discount.
