With so many of us being our own bartenders these days, a lot of people we know are buying more alcohol (and mixers and tools!) than usual. And all that stuff needs to go somewhere. (Because it’s probably not great to have three bottles of gin sitting on the kitchen counter behind you during Zoom calls. Plus, if you have kids, you want these bottles tucked away — ideally, locked up, even!) So we hunted around to find some of the coolest DIY liquor cabinets out there. Get inspired and then you’ll not only have a place for your newly acquired booze collection, you’ll also have a quick weekend project to keep you busy.

1. IKEA’s BESTA Cabinet with a Cane Door

You’d never know that this cute liquor cabinet started with the oh-so-simple BESTA cabinet at IKEA. The crafter (who actually isn’t crafty at all) bought the door and some accessories from Norse Interiors, an online retailer that sells compatible pieces to go with IKEA’s popular MALM and BESTA series. That woven topper? It’s actually a basket that just happens to look like it’s built into the piece.

2. A Liquor Drawer

We’ve seen plenty of built-in pantry drawers before, but we’ve never seen them used for alcohol. This is such a great idea! Especially because the drawer makes it easy to see what’s hiding in the back.

3. An Old Cabinet with a Paint Job

The next time you’re driving by an old piece of furniture that a neighbor’s put out on the curb, consider slowing down. If you paint it, you could end up with something as cool as this home bar. It’s amazing what a coat of paint and a bit of styling can do to an otherwise dated piece.

4. An IKEA Cabinet With a Retro Look

Another IKEA hack! This time, the crafter used IKEA’s IVAR cabinet as the base. She added a few curved pieces of MDF to the front of the doors with wood glue, then primed and painted the whole piece a funky retro-inspired green (The Little Greene Paint Company’s Green Vertider). She finished the whole thing off with some legs and hardware.

5. A Bookshelf Turned Bar

This home bartender started with a basic bookshelf, adding paneling and lighting, rearranged the shelves, and filled the whole thing with wine, glasses, and spirits.

Where do you stash your liquor? Is it right out in the open, or hidden away in a cupboard or bar cabinet?
