Peppermint is one of the many iconic flavors of the holiday season, and we start to crave it the minute there's a wintery chill in the air. Its cool, crisp flavor mimics the weather perfectly, and it is a nice change from the warm, spicy flavors so often found in sweet treats this time of year (hello, gingerbread!).

While we could simply buy a bunch of candy canes to get our fix, these five sweet treats are even more fun. If you have a peppermint-obsessed friend, family member, or coworker, make their holiday even sweeter with one of these recipes. Just follow the red-and-white swirl for minty desserts you can make at home.

1. Peppermint Mocha Snack Cake

This coffee-spiked chocolate cake topped with a sea of crushed peppermint candies is humble enough that it can be whipped up mid-week, but festive enough that it feels at place at just about any holiday gathering you're attending this year.

2. How To Make Peppermint Bark

Nothing beats chunks of bright, rich peppermint bark. While it's most often bought in fancy-looking tins from a well-known cooking-supply store, it's actually quite simple to make at home. It's a great DIY gift — if you can manage to not hoard it all for yourself, that is.

3. Peppermint Pinwheel Cookies

The red swirls ensure these cookies are already quite festive, but they're made even more so with bottoms that are brushed with some melted white or dark chocolate and then sprinkled with crushed peppermint hard candies.

4. Chocolate Peppermint Sandwich Cookies

These Oreo-like cookies are cakey, chocolatey, and filled with the creamiest cool peppermint icing around. Using holiday-themed cooking cutters makes the sandwich cookies especially fitting this time of year.

5. Peppermint Red Velvet Cake Roll

Classic red velvet cake is given the holiday treatment here, as it's turned into a cake roll and frosted with silky peppermint buttercream.
