4 Things You Should Know About Soup for Breakfast

Sure, breakfast for dinner is a thing, but it’s rare that the concept gets switched around. Who says you can’t do dinner for breakfast?

In some other parts of the world, sipping soup for breakfast isn’t a farfetched idea at all — in fact, it’s the norm. However, in the U.S., the concept really has never caught on. Maybe it’s time for the tables to turn, because soup for breakfast is a simple, satisfying, and nutritious way to start your day.

Here’s all you need to know to convince you to swap out your usual bowl of hot cereal for a bowl of soup.

1. It’s an Easy Way to Up Your Vegetable Intake

If you’re already eating a healthy breakfast, chances are you’re getting a serving of fruit in there, whether it’s in the form of a banana as you run out the door or a big handful of berries atop your yogurt. But you’re probably not consuming much in the vegetable department until at least lunch. A big bowl of soup can pack in more than a couple servings of vegetables effortlessly.

2. You Likely Already Have Some in Your Fridge or Freezer

One of the best parts about soup is that, more often than not, it tastes even better the next day once the flavors have married together. So that giant pot you made on Monday night is going to be even more delicious Tuesday morning.

Soup also freezes well, so you can divide that big pot into individual portions and toss them in the freezer. In the morning, grab one, run it under hot water to loosen in from the container, dump the frozen chunk in a saucepan, and defrost and reheat it over medium heat.

3. You Can Carry It with You Through the Morning

Swap out that thermos of coffee for a thermos of soup and you’ve got your hot breakfast and hot drink all rolled into one. It will stay nice and toasty on your commute and will be a welcome treat once you’re settled at your desk.

Soup has a wonderful way of being satisfying without being heavy. That means you’ll be fueled until your next meal, but won’t be weighed down by something equally as hearty like a big bowl of oatmeal.

If you’re not convinced, there’s no reason why you can’t add extra bulk to your soup in the form of an egg. Slide a fried one on top, slice a hard-boiled one in half and drop it in, or even poach one right in the hot soup.
