I just had to giggle when I saw this corn dog recipe from BetsyLife — a hot dog, inside a zucchini, inside a fried layer of batter! Does the zucchini cancel out the deep-frying? Is this a healthier, happier corn dog?
Well, regardless of how you feel about it, you have to give props for the idea — and for the execution. Check out how she got the hot dog inside the zucchini: A power tool was involved!

The idea of biting into hot, juicy zucchini inside fried batter actually sounds delicious — have you ever tried something like this?

Martha Concrete Lam...

Yeah, skip the hotdog, I want batter-dipped zucchini on a stick!
It's like a turducken
@hipcheck is right! Bring on the corn-chini! A "healthier, happier corn dog" would involve excluding the "dog" completely. That just looks disgusting and unappetizing.
Agreedo, HelsBells and hipcheck.
She could have just used an apple corer. Seems kind of gross to use a power tool.
LOL on the corn-chini! How about hot-zuch!?
That looks so unappetizing, sorry :( Whole unseasoned zucchini, no. Maybe shred/grate zucchini, mix with binder (egg white?) season it, wrap hot dog in it, and then batter-fry?
I agree with MLaura. This looks disgusting and to quote Jane Lynch from Role Models "what does this remind you of".
It probably tastes alright, but there's a huge ick factor from using a drill bit on a vegetable. Apple corer seems more reasonable to me.
I don't know where you keep your power tools but there's no 'ick' factor here. A clean, sanitized drill bit would be just fine for me. As long as it hasn't been used on anything but untreated wood it'd be no different than eating grits or anything else stirred with a wooden spoon. As for deep fried veggies - no thanks. If I'm going to have zucchini it'll be in something sweet like a good quick bread.
My local county fair featured these a few years ago, and I had a chance to try one.
Have you ever needed to cook many hot dogs and resorted to the boil method? You know, drop a pack or two of dogs in boiling water.
That's what these tasted like. Only with corn dog outsides. I had one... stopped at that. Not fully back, but not what I was expecting and sure as hell not something I go for in food.
It seems to completely miss what a corn dog is all about, which is deep-fat-fried, golden, fatty nondescript animal product-filled, completely non-green-vegetable-oriented fun.
I don't see how this is healthier... you still have the hot dog and batter and deep frying... you're just adding the calories (and fiber, granted) of the zucchini on top. In fact, due to the whole thing being bigger, you're got even more batter surface to fry! I think they managed to make a corndog *less* healthy :P Impressive, in a strange and unhealthy way ;)
