What strikes you first about Yiming Wang's renovated kitchen in her pre-war apartment is the black. Black paint? Nope. Floor to ceiling black tile, which makes for one easy-to-clean backsplash! The cabinets, faucet, stainless steel racks, and stovetop are all IKEA, while the black floor tiles were purchased for $3/each at Home Depot.
The dark color works in this case because the giant windows provide plenty of light, while the antique dining table is a perfectly offbeat match to the Saarinen tulip chairs.

What exactly about this kitchen is "prewar?" If they installed the tile themselves and got all the cabinets and fixtures from IKEA, wouldn't that make it modern? Pre-war to me indicates prior to 1939 (or 1941 for the U.S., if you get technical).
I like the black and love the hanging dish drainers above the sink, but there is absolutely nothing 1930s about this kitchen. It's closer to 1960s Mod than Pre-war. Unless of course you meant to type "Post-war," in which case it would be entirely apt.
Any idea how the shelf was made?
Vintagejenta, the building itself is prewar. I should have clarified. They did a renovation of the kitchen.
Okay, I thought that might be the case, but the title was misleading. I was looking for a sweet, late-'30s tiled kitchen!
Love those black floor tiles, it's a little hard but are they ceramic? And do you know if they're easy to do yourself?
Where are the stools outside the kitchen from?
The kitchen is lovely, and if a person wasn't comfortable with black, a deep cobalt blue would also be stunning.
what a romantic little kitchen. i love that its compact but not overwhelming or cluttered. i think the black works because of the natural light and the white cabinets and counter pop without that it would be too dark for my taste. the little wooden table is a nice little detail, softens the modern.
This was my favorite from AT's Big Book of Small, Cool Spaces! I recognized it immediately. This kitchen makes me miss Japan, where I lived for six years.
I agree that stylistically the renovation has a 60s feel, but the bones of the apartment are older, and that will always influence how the space feels overall. I think the table by the windows is a great mix of styles that call out specific dates in design history - the strong vertical of the early 20th C. windows, the curvy little table, and the Saarinen chairs mix together perfectly.
Where or where is that microwave from? I have search high and low for a tiny one like that.
Nevermind. I just realized that it is a radio.
