The owners of this kitchen created their own wall of upper cabinets by hanging a mix of wooden boxes and baskets in varying lengths and heights. Whatever you think of this look, we can at least give them props for their ingenuity! So what do you think? Clever and appealing, or too hodgepodge for your tastes?

This person pulled it off... but I would never attempt such a feat.
No, and I would never be able to sell a house that had this because it just looks shoddy. Cabinets also hold a lot more weight than a wooden box or basket. The box on the left side of that photo looks like it's bowing.
Agreed eaturveggies1 - Its fun and quirky, but I think it would drive me bonkers.
It looks awesome, but that wouldn't be NEAR enough stogage for me!
Nope, the asymmetry would drive me insane. Not to mention, I need doors, no matter how awesome the open cabinet trend looks. My cabinets just aren't that organized.
I love it! It took a couple of seconds of squinting at the photo before I realized what was mismatched. I think it gives the kitchen great character and love the clever use of re-purposed materials.
I love it! I agree with Morgan Lynn, it give the kitchen so much character. There is nothing that I hate more than to walk into these cookie cutter houses where the kitchens are all the same these days. You even see this on the home shows on television now - they all look alike.
I recently remodeled my kitchen in a NEW home and went with open shelving. Everyone screamed don't do it! I did and I absolutely love it!
And you cannot beat the use of the re-purposed materials. We ALL need to be doing such things.
I would totally try it. I love baskets, I love the eclectic look, and I am not in a position in my life in which I could ever think about installing actual cabinets if they were needed. I can def. understand the idea that a house couldn't sell with this as the kitchen situation. I think it would have to be an overall rustic place to appeal to a buyer, but also seems like a likely situation for a renter (like me!) to find herself in.
I currently live in a house with 7 people and this type of creativity (with baskets, crates, etc.) has really saved me from going crazy from lack of organization.
I admire them for their creativity, but I couldn't do this, it would make me crazy!
I like it - and I think I'd like it most in a bathroom (small mismatched shelving) or in a main room (low mismatched cabinets for books/media maybe?) rather than in a kitchen. Though I like it in the photo despite being given the howling fantods by the prospect of dust, street-grime (through windows), and grease particles that coat my (pre war NYC rental) kitchen cabinets...
I am a klutz...I would destroy(!!!) those.
I dunno. I think it would make me crazy, I do love the idea of it.
I love this as a temporary fix, but I don't think I would choose it as a permanent design. Doesn't look durable.
The aesthetics don't bother me so much as the inefficient use of space does. This is the same reason that I hate single wall-mounted shelves in the kitchen. If you're going to put upper cabinets on the walls, you should at least get to store lots of stuff in them!
The post cheat a little bit. Those are not working as cabinets but as selves with a back and a roof, i would say. I looooove this kitchen. And I bet they have the food and half-empty boxes and less beautiful things well hidden behind the doors in the lower cabinets
I like the look, but it doesn't look like it is working well as storage. The crate with the plates in it is bowing a bit from the weight. And the kitchen looks all redone, yet they have to use a lamp inside one of the shelves for task lighting? I also love the look of the crate's rough wood, but what will that be like after a year of kitchen grease lands on it?
Maybe they are just saving their pennies to complete the cabinets that are on the bottom.
I'd like to see a well-done use of recycled cabinets. Restore and similar always seem to have a bunch of random cabinets, and it seems like someone creative could combine the mismatches for a cool result.
It's super cute but I value my shelves and cabinet space too much.
This looks like they were trying too hard to be eclectic. While I am an advocate of open shelving this does not look functional. And I am sure any good from repurposing old crates was more than canceled out by the seemingly brand new catalogue countertops and drawers.
I however believe that this would work well in another context like a dorm room/student apartment.
No.
