I fell for John Talbot's work a few years ago when I was back home visiting my mom and she took me to meet him at the Hollywood Farmers' Market. I stood in front of his table of wooden bowls, gawking in awe as he told me about his process. Talbot's materials are fallen Los Angeles trees and the process is arduous, but loving.
This Live Oak bowl is a recent example of his work; a shaped piece of wood, simple in design but brimming with energy. You need to see Talbot's hands to understand the energy he passes into his work.
Read about Talbot's process here. Understand that his inventory constantly changes since each piece is a one-off. He updates his website regularly. For up-to-the-minute updates, join his mailing list by shooting him an email. Tell him Sara Kate sent you.
