Be it millet, oats, rice, barley... toasting adds such depth of flavor to whatever dish in which you're using the grain. Toast a bunch ahead of time and store it in an airtight container. Then cook the grains as normal in whatever dishes you typically use them.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spread washed grains evenly on a baking sheet.
- Toast in the oven for 12-15 minutes, until they give off a warm, nutty aroma.
- Grains can also be skillet-toasted. Just add grains to a hot pan on medium heat and stir constantly until they give off a nutty aroma.
We've been enjoying toasted short-grain brown rice for breakfast not that the mornings are chilly. They cook up creamy and are delicious with fruit and yogurt stirred in.
