If you would have asked me five years ago if I would have cared about the trash can in my kitchen, I would have most likely laughed and walked away. Investing in a quality (or even funky) trash can is a wonderful idea!
I personally love my Simplehuman Rectangular Trash Can from Williams Sonoma. It's a tad pricey but it's so worth it because after you make that initial investment — you'll actual wonder when you'll ever need to buy another one (the answer is probably never, or a very very long time).
If I had an extra $469.00 to spend on a trash can, I would most definitely buy the Vipp Trash Can from Fitzu. It's stunningly stylish and made from top of the line materials to not only stand the test of time but look darn good while doing so. Here are some more wonderful waste baskets:
• Vipp Trash Can, $469.00 at Fitzu
• Shopping Bag Waste Basket, € 9.00 at Selekkt
• Simplehuman Rectangular Trash Can, $149.95 at Williams Sonoma
• Easy Garbage, 18,90 € at Un4Verde
• OXO Good Grips Trash Can, $122.03 at Amazon

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

Is it wrong that I want to paint the Vipp trash can blue and white and call it R2D2?
Also, I cannot, in good conscience, see spending that much money on a waste basket.
I also find it kind of amazing that trash cans can cost so much. But I guess if it's something that's out on display, it's as much a design element as anything else in the kitchen. As a dog owner, I have to keep my trash behind closed cabinet doors, so a couple small basic ones do the trick, although a little awkward to access sometimes. We're about to renovate and I'm super psyched for Ikea's pull-out cabinet that holds big bins!
I purchased a "Simplehuman Plastic Lid Slim" model at Bed Bath & Beyond a few years ago for about $64 net (afer using a 20% mail discount coupon). It's stainless with a black hard plastic lid and it's rectangular and rounded at one of the longer ends. Best trash can I've ever owned. What I love...it fits perfectly under my counter so I don't have to use up "under sink space", it has a very hard structured removable liner that holds the bag tightly and fits into the can without showing when it's closed. None of the trash in the bag is in contact with the can or liner. The touch toe step opens the can without any effort. And I can use trash bags other than the Simplehuman ones that are made for it. They may be a bit larger, but still can be tucked in so they don't show outside of the can. The other thing that I love about it is that it's very attractive.
If you've ever shopped at BB&B you know that you're be swamped with mail discount coupons. They all have an expiration date but they always honor the coupons after that date so use those offers up ;-)))
The Vipp can better take its own trash out to the outside bin for that price.
That OXO on the other hand...I could see myself buying that one. My white rubbermaid won't stay closed anymore, and while my dog doesn't get into the garbage normally, he's not above taking something tasty smelling out that is near the top of a full bag.
Even a $400 trash can will eventually become gross like any other trash can. I would like something that looks a little nicer than the old black Rubbermaid bin that we have now..
@Merilynch I have the same trash can and love it as well. Unfortunately, it didn't fit where I was planning on it going (then again, I wasn't really thinking through having a trash can in the gap between where facing cabinet doors don't meet). Its current location on the wall leading into my kitchen doesn't bother me because its still easily accessible and its not impinging on any of my storage areas (or walkway).
I have been on the lookout for a stylish (inexpensive!) trash can. I HATE the plastic ones with the flip lid that just get so icky. I am also not a fan of the only other option out there.... stainless and black. I just want a cool, retro looking metal can that's glossy white... would love it so have the rounded top with "PUSH" on it. Is that too much to ask????
