Every time I taste a Godello wine I am reminded why I am so in love with this Spanish white grape variety.
This 2010 Godello from Viña Godeval is no exception. The wine is fantastically, energetic, refreshing and flavorful — all the attributes I am looking for in an unoaked white wine.
Youthful, pale lemony color, with a nose that captivates with its focus and strident minerality. The aromas are subtle, yet distinctive and tightly defined — lemon and lime citrus, stone and tree fruit with hints of wild flowers and beeswax. It is crisp with a taut spine of acidity, lively and ample fruit flavors that mirror the nose. This wine has a lively energy and the stony minerality persists across the palate to a very long finish
At the table: This 2010 Godello from Viña Godeval will pair with so many fish and seafood dishes, even those with rich sauces, as the wine's crisp acidity cuts right through the richness. I especially like to pair this wine with oven roasted Chilean Sea Bass drizzled with a reduction of olive oil, garlic and anchovy, and topped with a mixture of chopped rosemary and breadcrumbs.
About Viña Godeval, the Godello grape and Valdeorras
Viña Godeval, established in 1986, is one of the leading, yet also artisanal wine producers in the Valdeorras area of Galicia in northwestern Spain. Its sole focus is the Godello grape, and its 38 acres of vineyards are exclusively planted to this variety.
Godello is a high quality white grape variety native to Galicia in Northwestern Spain, and also grown in Portugal. In Galicia, Godello is most known around Valdeorras, where it makes particularly fine, vibrant, minerally wines.
Valdeorras is a Spanish wine appellation located in eastern Galicia — known as Green Spain. Valdeorras, meaning "Valley of Gold" is Galicia's most inland wine area, and as such has a more continental climate than its western neighbors closer to the Atlantic. As well as Godello, Valdeorras is also renowned for its red wines produced from the Mencía and Garnacha grapes.
