Mid-gold in color, the nose is attractive, ripe yet subtle showing ripe orchard fruit, melon, grapefruit, an earthy mineral note, hints of apricot and a tinge of honey and creamy spice. Bright and fairly crisp with a refreshing, lively mouthfeel, but also sufficiently round and creamy. Nice palate weight, with ample broad, well defined flavors that mirror the nose. Moderately long finish.
At the Table
This wine is not overly fruity and is nicely structured, therefore its place is more at the table than sipped as an apéritif. Quite versatile in terms of pairings, I would serve this Maçon Lugny with smoked fish, roasted salmon or trout, roast herbed chicken, quiche or even with frogs legs for the more adventurous. At home I've served this wine with numerous different dishes, but a recent one that stands out is Maiale al Latte - Pork Cooked in Curdled Milk. In my opinion this is a delicious combination.
About Maçon Lugny, Les Charmes and Caves de Lugny
In general, good value Burgundy wine is fairly hard to find. However, if you look south past the illustrious Côte d'Or to the Maçon region you can really find some great value wines.
The Maçon is a wine region in Southern Burgundy. It tends to be warmer than the more famous Côte d'Or, hence producing grapes with broader and riper flavors. Though red wines are produced, white wines, made from the Chardonnay grape, reign. Within the Maçon certain villages have the right to affix their name to the regional "Maçon" designation. Lugny is one of the most well known of these villages. In terms of vinification, most Maçon wines do not see any oak (certainly not any new oak) and are typically fermented in stainless steel. They are best consumed within 2 to 4 years of release.
The Caves de Lugny is a large cooperative with 250+ members. In fact it produces about half the total wine made in the region! Les Charmes, a single vineyard, is the jewel in their crown - well situated within the commune of Lugny, with a very favorable 'terroir' for grape cultivation.
