Feel like a splurge? Have something special to celebrate? If so, check out this delicious, refined, sophisticated Tuscan Sangiovese wine. It's expressive, flavorful, and a perfect partner for fall's warming dishes. What I particularly liked about the 2007 Poggio Valente Morellino di Scansano Riserva was the how it kept on evolving in my glass. Layers of aroma and flavor seduce you to take another sip - black and red cherries, licorice, dark plums, clove, bouquet garni, dried strawberry, hints of leather, underbrush and a wonderful earthy minerality. Tannins are ripe, with a good firm grip. Mouth-filling and moderately fleshy, there is a rich plushness to this wine. It has excellent intensity and depth of flavor and a lingering savory finish.
At the Table
Sangiovese is a great food wine, with its grippy tannins and bright acidity cutting through protein and fat. Try it with Osso Buco, a well-marbled steak, a classic 'Bistecca Fiorentina', grilled sweet sausage or even a simple Spaghetti Bolognese. We enjoyed it recently with delicious grilled loin lamb chops, homemade ratatouille and roasted baby potatoes.
About Morellino di Scansano and Poggio Valente
Morellino di Scansano is a designated DOC wine area along Tuscany's Maremma coast, around the town of Scansano. The story of Poggio Valente started back in 1996 when the well-known Elisabetta Geppetti, owner of Fattoria La Pupille, bought the beautiful, 12-hectare-vineyard, which is located near the town of Pereta within the Morellino di Scansano DOC. This 2007 Poggio Valente is 97% Sangiovese with a 3% dash of Alicante. Riserva level, it was aged for 15 months in French oak barrel (40% new) and a further 7 months in bottle before release.
