This wine Clos Siguier is from the Cahors region of southwest France, a region noted for its deeply colored wines — and traditionally known as the 'black' wines of Cahors. As with all Cahors wines, is made predominantly from Malbec. While Malbec's heritage and origin is in France (where it is more commonly known as Côt), it is Argentina, where the grape shot to fame, and who can claim responsibility for putting Malbec wines firmly on the map.
Packed with dark plummy and wild bramble fruit, Clos Siguier is full bodied with a nicely rounded mouthfeel and solid grip. Notes of smoke, spice and tobacco leaf add extra dimensions of charm. It has a noticeable depth of flavor and good fruit concentration, reflecting the age of the vines (50-60 years I believe). It has a moderately long length and persistent earthy finish.
Clos Siguier practices organic viticulture and this wine is made from 95% Malbec and 5% Tannat, which is another French variety, that has more recently become quite popular in Uruguay. The wine was aged in older barrels for a number of months before bottling and release, enhancing the structure and adding complexity without any overt oak aroma or flavor.
Clos Siguier pairs perfectly with hearty winter dishes such as a cassoulet, beef or venison stews or hotpots, or even pasta with a rich Bolognese sauce.
