We love the look of a rug under the dining room table. If you have a dedicated dining room, it can make the room feel finished and well-designed. If you are carving a dining space out of a larger open-plan home or apartment, a rug can help the dining area feel more distinct.

But rugs can be expensive, and the occasional spill is inevitable, which is exactly why we’re in favor of using carpet tiles in the dining room instead.

1. You can customize size and shape.

For most dining tables you’ll probably be safe with standard rug sizes. But what if you have a super-long dining table, or one that is somewhere between a 5×7-foot rug and an 8×10-foot rug? Carpet tiles can solve that problem by allowing you to choose your own size, and you can even trim them to custom fit your space.

2. They can be less expensive.

You might not end up saving a lot of money if you opt for FLOR carpet tiles, but, while popular, they aren’t the only carpet tiles on the market. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s carry carpet tiles at lower prices.

3. You can create your own design.

One of our favorite parts about carpet tiles is that you can truly customize your design. By combining multiple patterns or colors you can create a truly original rug. Another one of our favorite tricks is to use one pattern, but rotate every other tile a quarter turn. Depending on how bold the pattern is you can end up with a stunning or subtle new pattern.

4. You can rotate tiles to prevent uneven wear and tear.

The carpet pieces under the center of your table will probably wear more slowly than those around the edges and under your chairs. So to keep things looking fresh you can always swap the inner tiles for the outer ones after a year or two. It’s a quick way to prolong the life of your rug.

5. They are easy to replace.

Let’s face it, spills are inevitable. You can’t expect to have a dinner party — or even just a family dinner — without the possibility of something being dropped on your rug. And while most spills can be cleaned up fairly easily, there are some (we’re looking at you, red wine) that are harder to deal with. If you have carpet tiles, you can easily replace just the one or two that are stained in less than five minutes. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to get a few extra tiles from the start.
