Bagged lettuce is a lot of things. It's convenient, it's usually affordable, and it can make a quick lunch or dinner side salad in a cinch. But recent health scares and extensive media coverage have people chatting about the other not-so-great side of bagged lettuce.
Modern Farmer recently explored the potential health risks that go along with bagged lettuce. In short, the article says that during the lettuce harvest, farm workers core the plants in the field and on occasion use knives that may have come in contact with pathogens. Pair that with the latex that some plants are reported to use when processing lettuce, and the resulting bacteria that forms, and suddenly bagged lettuce doesn't look so great.
In the article Michael Doyle, director of the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety, offers some perspective in addition to some hard facts. He mentions how millions of people buy bagged lettuce but millions of people certainly don't sick, and people with more compromised systems like babies or the elderly would be most at risk. But with more incidents in recent history, many people are fearful that the problem will continue to grow and that bagged lettuce is something to cross off your weekly shopping list.
